Mpesa and online payments
How ideal is mpesa for online payments if I can pay a good or service by mpesa and immediately call Safcon and inform them that I made a transaction to the wrong number and request them to reverse transaction - and they actually do it as long as the other party hasn't picked the money yet? ./Ok3ch

If you have sold me an item and I've paid for it using M-Pesa, and you have issued me a sales receipt (I hope) then I believe if I reverse that payment, it amounts to FRAUD and you have the right to take legal action against me. M-Pesa is being operated within the laws of the land. It's just a money transfer method. I have another case to compare: I have a Credit Card with a local bank and every time I perform a transaction, I get an SMS (within 5 minutes) informing me about the same transaction and instructing me to call a certain number (where I can block the payment) suppose the transaction wasn't by me. Now, if I go to Nakumatt or any shop, buy staff, and call the said number to block payment, does that make this Credit Card service less than ideal? The use of "ideal" in this context worries me! To me, both cases are ideal. Why should one be reversing payment for goods he'd holding in his custody, plus the proof of purchase (receipt)? Thing is, if the guy has already chucked the money from an agent you can do nothing, coz probably this is someone who'll dump the SIM asap. But guys reverse all the time coz the guy who has received the money is usually still contemplating whether to withdraw the money or not. I'v not heard of a situation where the money has already been withdrawn and they've reversed the transaction... anyone? why I asked this, a friend told me a scenario where they went drinking in a pub and the pub accepted mpesa payments, so the guyz drowned 5k worth of beer and paid by mpesa, only for the guy to reverse back afew minutes after leaving the establishment, and from that day, tha pub doesn't accept mpesa - so should this go on, then everyone will refuse these payments and we back to square one - not ideal. The case of card payments, the receiving bank actually initiates a transfer back, that is, if you bought something at Nakumatt, then the merchant has to be aware that you want to reverse the transaction, before the transaction is actually reversed. I had an arguement with someone at safcon and they didn't see the point of having such controls - which to me is knowing that fraud can occur and not doing anything about it. Allow of to digress, online payment solutions will work fully in kenya, when courier services are brought in the debate, and town councils who are responsible for naming of streets, then gis can be incorporated to provide geotagging of the merchandise in question. There should be an extra option on Mpesa that locks the cheddar in your account even if you haven't withdrawn it. apparently every mpesa transaction generates a unique id/code. So all safaricom has to do is add 2 new menus (accept sent amount & reverse) which prompts the recipient of cash to enter the transaction code the sender receives (sender can sms this code to recipient) so as to unlock the cash sent. Meanwhile the cash can be held up in a virtual account (each transaction has a unique code) such that the sender may choose to cancel the transaction if he realises he got the wrong recipient without calling customer care by pressing [reverse] and using the transaction code. Since the transaction only becomes commited when the recipient unlocks the cash with the code sent by sender the amount remains suspended in the virtual account till someone with the [recipient phone no. + code] or [sender phone no. + code] can claim. Problem solved. Feel free to poke holes in my idea. it may not be all that perfect.
they just need to add a simple menu that allows you to scroll your phone book and the number of errors will fall. as for the rest of the errors, maybe they should allow their agents to register businesses (decentralize it) but your idea still solves the problem too. -- Bored? This reversal of a transaction is a sure way of making the system worth using. The amount of money lost through m-Pesa {have not heard complaints on Zap} are enourIn my opinion, if the banks haven't implemented such a service, then telcos cannot initiate such an undertaking. Well, I put these questions here since the number of techies from safcon I've talked to don't want to admit there is a problem about this reversal thing - a problem to these small time traders who might want to use the service even before walking to safcon to register. Can you imagin how long the menu can be if all Kenya traders registered and were listed on the paybill function? Why not make in built function to prevent these abuses and let everyone decide when they want to use the service. You don't have to register with Visa to accept credit card payments, do you? Zain you actually pay a setup fee of 180,000 ksh and a monthly fee of guess 24K, but there transaction fee is fixed at 10bob, But the CEO must Approve.. they have a lot of ducumentation ang afreements... Mpesa for Online payment?? For now its at your own risk. If you want to trade with mpesa in your small business the best thing would be to signup for an account with paybill-mpesa. When signed up you will be the only one who can reverse a transaction or any errors in payment. But for the sim based one reversals are all over and there are too many conmen out there doing it. Theres is no API yet for Mpesa but the ZAP one is pretty good for system integration(but can be improved), which means that for your online payments youre given a ready platform to hook up to your web/trading portal. If you intended to withdraw but missed a certain digit in the agent ID, say if you wanted to withdraw in outlet 08102 (assume Uchumi Ngong Rd) but get a message telling you to collect your cash in Greenlight Meru, that is the same information you will give Customer care representative. Chances are, Greenlight Meru will have number which bears a striking similarity to that of Uchumi Ngong Rd e.g. 08210, 08201 etc. Customer care representative will get in touch with Greenlight Meru and if indeed they claim you took the money, they will be expected to read out your ID NO (since you should always present original ID during any transaction). Mostly, they will not guess it right and therefore the money will be reversed. If indeed you wanted to play tricks, they will be able to say your number right and therefore you wont get the money The rule is, whoever requests for a reversal MUST demonstrate it was truly an erroneous transaction before customer care representative can either talk to the other person or take any action. Mostly, CCR will ask many question but this is intended to ensure they get the right infor before taking the next course of action Any action taken, the system records the CCR who did that and therefore they dont joke around with this. We have studied this product and I can assure you as at now, it is extremely secure - besides, there is a dedicated fraud team that is continously studying all the tricks crooks can use and thereby sealing them. Quiet informative. How well will a rural or ignorant folk understand all these? The reversal process, in my opinion, should be easy and accomodative for even the illiterate to grasp with ease. If you send money to a wrong number (say 0710222222 when you were meant to send it to 0720222222), the customer care will examine the transaction, ask you a few questions and then reverse the transaction without having to talk to 0710222222. In any case, the MSG displayed will show owner's name. So, they will compare your the two nos and determine if your claim is actually true.
If you intended to withdraw but missed a certain digit in the agent ID, say if you wanted to withdraw in outlet 08102 (assume Uchumi Ngong Rd) but get a message telling you to collect your cash in Greenlight Meru, that is the same information you will give Customer care representative. Chances are, Greenlight Meru will have number which bears a striking similarity to that of Uchumi Ngong Rd e.g. 08210, 08201 etc. Customer care representative will get in touch with Greenlight Meru and if indeed they claim you took the money, they will be expected to read out your ID NO (since you should always present original ID during any transaction). Mostly, they will not guess it right and therefore the money will be reversed. If indeed you wanted to play tricks, they will be able to say your number right and therefore you wont get the money
The rule is, whoever requests for a reversal MUST demonstrate it was truly an erroneous transaction before customer care representative can either talk to the other person or take any action. Mostly, CCR will ask many question but this is intended to ensure they get the right infor before taking the next course of action
Any action taken, the system records the CCR who did that and therefore they dont joke around with this.
We have studied this product and I can assure you as at now, it is extremely secure - besides, there is a dedicated fraud team that is continously studying all the tricks crooks can use and thereby sealing them.

How many times has one called customer care of any of our telcos, to be told the matter you are calling about will be attended in a couple of minutes only to call again and be told it has not been addressed yet. Ask exhaustively before pointing an accussing finger. Alternatively, give us his email and we shall ask him a million questions!

My point is and always has been, it is blutant wrong to reverse a transaction without reference to both the initiator and the receiver, whether the transaction was leggit ot not. The best the CS can do is simple call up the other party and have some authentication/authorization/informational. How many times has one called customer care of any of our telcos, to be told the matter you are calling about will be attended in a couple of minutes only to call again and be told it has not been addressed yet. Chances are, Greenlight Meru will have number which bears a striking similarity to that of Uchumi Ngong Rd e.g. 08210, 08201 etc. Customer care representative will get in touch with Greenlight Meru and if indeed they claim you took the money, they will be expected to read out your ID NO (since you should always present original ID during any transaction). Mostly, they will not guess it right and therefore the money will be reversed. If indeed you wanted to play tricks, they will be able to say your number right and therefore you wont get the money
The rule is, whoever requests for a reversal MUST demonstrate it was truly an erroneous transaction before customer care representative can either talk to the other person or take any action. Guess they aren't strict about the reversal of transactions. In short, you shouldnt bank on them for your transactions at he moment, unless you register as a business. In fact that is one reason for safaricom to keep it that way.

How many times has one called customer care of any of our telcos, to be told the matter you are calling about will be attended in a couple of minutes only to call again and be told it has not been addressed yet. Ask exhaustively before pointing an accussing finger. Alternatively, give us his email and we shall ask him a million questions!

If you send money to a wrong number (say 0710222222 when you were meant to send it to 0720222222), the customer care will examine the transaction, ask you a few questions and then reverse the transaction without having to talk to 0710222222. In any case, the MSG displayed will show owner's name. So, they will compare your the two nos and determine if your claim is actually true.
If you intended to withdraw but missed a certain digit in the agent ID, say if you wanted to withdraw in outlet 08102 (assume Uchumi Ngong Rd) but get a message telling you to collect your cash in Greenlight Meru, that is the same information you will give Customer care representative. Chances are, Greenlight Meru will have number which bears a striking similarity to that of Uchumi Ngong Rd e.g. 08210, 08201 etc. Customer care representative will get in touch with Greenlight Meru and if indeed they claim you took the money, they will be expected to read out your ID NO (since you should always present original ID during any transaction). Mostly, they will not guess it right and therefore the money will be reversed. If indeed you wanted to play tricks, they will be able to say your number right and therefore you wont get the money
The rule is, whoever requests for a reversal MUST demonstrate it was truly an erroneous transaction before customer care representative can either talk to the other person or take any action.
