Re: [Skunkworks] Is number portability finally here?

I wonder why someone would want to buy safaricom then shift to zain, or yu. Price wars cannot be a justification. Maybe features war. There are people who have invested heavily on their networks in terms of service features like Mpesa, paybill, and other subscriber services. And finally, once you have migrated say from safaricom to orange, how will I know in which network you belong? Responses from operators attached http://www.cck.go.ke/links/consultations/published_responses.html Technically, I suspect its deployment to be painful.E.g. If i subscribe to Number portabilty, this means my NDC(0722) will remain the same across networks. This means a separate entity/Sub Db will be required to be queried for every call setup in the network(s) which has to be integrated to all operator billing systems. If I migrate to say orange, and use their network, obviously services will not vary. Its not clear how the transparent the tariff will be since a safcom subscriber calling me will expect to be charged as normal whereas I'm now technically on Orange network. What's the mechanism to be used to inform the caller that the dialed number is now on Orange and not safcom? Wouldn't that lead to confusion? Will there be delays in call setup time since now a separate core network node has been introduced? Are there successful(or not) case studies for us to understand these scenarios? ./bernard On Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 4:32 PM, lordmwesh <lordmwesh@gmail.com> wrote:

My hunch is that come July operators ( Read Safaricom) will mention that this is not something that will not happen overninght and will need time to move to the new regime. Mark my Prophecy -come July number portability will not be a reality. In fact not in the next 1 year. Werent all sim cards supposed to be registered by last December ? - To contribute to the deeper understanding of all facets of software testing, by participating in ISTQB working groups.
- To provide skills development and certification for workers at all levels of IT industry, by linking future technology trends with ongoing certification. - To provide a means by which resources can be developed and aligned with future trends in the industry in order to ensure that professional services can be delivered to all domains requiring such skills.
- To provide the Kenyan IT market with a common understanding of testing through the use of ISTQB's syllabus and certification process. - To highlight the importance of independent software testing and the benefits to be achieved by using generally accepted standards. - To provide Kenyan testing professionals access to internationally recognised experts in the software testing domain.

Thanks Okech... This is where I suspected the confusion will set in: *8.If I can't tell what network somebody is with from the number, how will discounts for calls on the same network operate (on-net calls)? * The providers will know who their customers are, so they can still offer the discounts, but callers won't necessarily know if the people they call have switched to a new provider. To avoid unexpected charges, mobile users should confirm with their friends and their associates that they are using the same mobile network. It is therefore generally always better to use the service of the largest network(*Vodacom*), with the most subscribers to enjoy the cheapest calls. ./bernard On Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 5:11 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

to Number portabilty, this means my NDC(0722) will remain the same across networks.

There are people who have invested heavily on their networks in terms of service features like Mpesa, paybill, and other subscriber services.
And finally, once you have migrated say from safaricom to orange, how will I know in which network you belong? I would wish to send you Mpesa, or call you expecting rates like those of my network

This is a step in the right direction - to ensure quality software locally and also create a software-testing resource pool which can
outsource
for international jobs - but unfortunately the message comes late to all who would have wanted to attend:
*It is okay to forward this email BUT all those attending must RSVP via a response to this email no later than April 8th, 2010.*

Very true, your concerns are real and will be a challenge - I think if the mobile companies are genuine then cross network charges can be much lower and next to standardized like the 8bob across networks for Zain & Orange ( I stand corrected on this) and not as high as SufferingCon's charges across networks ./Ok3ch On Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 5:16 PM, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote:

This is where I suspected the confusion will set in:
8.If I can't tell what network somebody is with from the number, how will discounts for calls on the same network operate (on-net calls)?
The providers will know who their customers are, so they can still offer the discounts, but callers won't necessarily know if the people they call have switched to a new provider. To avoid unexpected charges, mobile users should confirm with their friends and their associates that they are using the same mobile network. It is therefore generally always better to use the service of the largest network(Vodacom), with the most subscribers to enjoy the cheapest calls.

Given that CCK is planning to register SIM cards by July, is planning to remove/lower interconnection fees, and vendors are preparing for number portability (implementing Signalling transfer points e.t.c), I'd say there is a good chance it will happen.
I would wish to send you Mpesa, or call you expecting rates like those of my network
Regards
Let me try to think outside the box here; Why do I have to buy credit for a certain provider? Why can't I just buy credit and use it from whichever provider? I buy credo ya 100, put in my orange sim card and call a landline, then swap sim card to zain and browse kiasi the put in my safcom sim card and pay for elec. You can probably guess my next question; why ain't there a universal sim card?

Yeah, and "universal credit", perhaps:-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

@Wash, Yes! Credit is just money, and money is universal. So whats so difficult in me giving some entity KShs. 100 to allow me to spend that money from/to whichever network? @Tony, Universal ATM card? If you can write a cheque from one bank to another, that means the banks have the systems to settle within themselves, thus, the same systems can be modified to allow me use my ATM card from any bank. I think this thread is deviating from the original purpose, maybe we can explore this hypothetical argument in another thread?
