Linux Mint comes with all the Codecs. There is a codec pack you can install for linux though, probably simpler than downloading mint, reinstalling? Mint is based on Ubuntu. I have 6, Felicia, if you need a copy. On Tue, Apr 7, 2009 at 3:51 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Mark, You may also want to consider installing automatix on top of Ubuntu, a package which will let you install many other useful and popular tools/codecs afterwards. Should be as simple as: sudo apt-get install automatix cheers, Mark 2009/4/7 Phares Kariuki <pkariuki@gmail.com>

Or, you could try Mandriva Linux, I use is often at work and at home and it has all the codecs to play most common movie and music formats. You can get the 2008 PowerPack DVD at http://my.co.ke/pub/isos/ On Tue, Apr 7, 2009 at 4:03 PM, Mark Blois <markdb@google.com> wrote:

Hi, Grab today's SVN snapshot of mplayer and compile that, it now supports most codecs natively. Mplayer for playing movies and mencoder for ripping movies. For sound, Amarok takes the cake :) On Tue, Apr 7, 2009 at 7:06 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

I am seeking to understand the above. I bought the safcom modem during their promotion in Feb09 @ 3000Ksh (free modem and access worth 3000Ksh for I think 1G of data.) After consuming less than 50% of the 1G (I use it mainly on weekends), the access was disabled and on enquiry i was informed that the 1G access was timed to be consumed within the 1mnth (4weeks). However, I was assured that the balance of access would be availed in my next purchase... I then opted to purchase the Ksh 2000 access (700Mb), given that I didnt manage to consume the previous 1G and hence saw no need to purchase the same. Furthermore, I expected current access volumes to be consolidated with the previous balance... But before I could consume 50% of the above 700MB, my 4weeks were over and access disabled. I have now purchased Ksh 1000 access (300MB) and from the trend you can predict that my access will be disabled before I consume it... Several questions arise: 1. How do I confirm that my balance of access is truly being forward and not "disappearing". 2. Is this the same charging model @ Zain, Orange? 3. Would post-paid be a better deal for me? 4. Why should Data-access be so restrictive (4wks) as compared to voice (which gives us almost 12wks grace period) walu.

For one thing its a way to make money;; what you have paid for is not very useful, what you *will *or *is* now paying for is useful to the company. That is the most basic answer from any business point of view. Why dont you take up the post paid ? It has worked for me,, i.e pay for only what you use ?? Someone informs me that there is an orange data advert on todays paper,,,i am yet to see one to confirm the exact page,, mabbe you could have a look ??

Mark, Mepis linux has always been ahead of the other distros when it comes to drivers and the like. You have the choice of downloading or asking me for the new 8.0 that is good for one who is migrating. It has the look and feel of Windows and once gave me sound drivers when i dual booted with XPSP2. Does anyone know of a distro that has drivers for their notebook Wifi? Let me know 2009/4/7 Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com>:

Guys, the issue is this - a professional linux distribution cd cannot contain certain codecs, such as for mp3 as they are proprietary, and for ubuntu / redhat / novell to include them would open them to legal action - so as Erick says, just download after doing the basic install. Distros which include the codecs are taking a risk - but if it's pure 'community' with no identifying organisation to sue in court - or no money to be had if they did - then these small distros can get away with it. there is no *standard* cd - point is, it's custom - according to your needs. you should start by making a list of all the packages you want, or if you are not sure, list all the kinds of things you want to do. (all the standard stuff should be installed from the normal cd - like openoffice etc.) next, find a friend with the same version of ubuntu as yours, who has all the stuff you need already installed - then aptoncd can make a cd out of all your friends packages, so you can then install on your pc. Even M$ does not support all the codecs out of the box you still have to fetch them online. Moses. On Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 8:11 PM, Tony White <tony.mzungu@gmail.com> wrote:
there is no *standard* cd - point is, it's custom - according to your needs. you should start by making a list of all the packages you want, or if you are not sure, list all the kinds of things you want to do. (all the standard stuff should be installed from the normal cd - like openoffice etc.)
next, find a friend with the same version of ubuntu as yours, who has all the stuff you need already installed - then aptoncd can make a cd out of all your friends packages, so you can then install on your pc.

yup (almost) - check out 'APTonCD' - a custom cd can be made with all the 'extras' which you need - and then installed on many offline machines.

Thanks, Tony. If Mark doesn't have an internet connection, is there
a
way to download or "slipstream" the codecs (like an XP Service Pack) ?

Guys, the issue is this - a professional linux distribution cd
cannot
contain certain codecs, such as for mp3 as they are proprietary, and for ubuntu / redhat / novell to include them would open them to legal action - so as Erick says, just download after doing the basic install.
Distros which include the codecs are taking a risk - but if it's pure 'community' with no identifying organisation to sue in court - or no money to be had if they did - then these small distros can get away with it.
