i'll tell you for sure if you need an out of the box media ready Distro go for DREAMLINUX........its PERFECT, its based on Debian and has ALL CODECS in place....

You're interested in the Multimedia Codecs. The command in the terminal is ;
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Or try VLC;
sudo apt-get install vlc
