Mark, there's no need to buy a new car just because your current one has a puncture (thanks, Rad)  :-) .  Follow the instructions below;

You're interested in the Multimedia Codecs.  The command in the terminal is ;
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Or try VLC;
sudo apt-get install vlc
