Even M$ does not support all the codecs out of the box you still have to fetch them online.

needs.  you should start by making a list of all the packages you
want, or if you are not sure, list all the kinds of things you want to
do. (all the standard stuff should be installed from the normal cd -
like openoffice etc.)

next, find a friend with the same version of ubuntu as yours, who has
all the stuff you need already installed - then aptoncd can make a cd
out of all your friends packages, so you can then install on your pc.
