How do you cope with the sedentary lifestyle of a techie?

Hi, As techies we spend many hours a day glued to our seats working at our various devices. And if you multiply your daily sitting time by the possible number of years in your career, it is a long long time spent sitting. Needless to say, this sedentary lifestyle is bad for a techie's health and doctors everywhere are telling desk workers to adopt a more active lifestyle to prevent the development of a whole bunch of diseases. For how long do you sit at one stretch? Is all the sitting taking a toll on your body? Does company management encourage you to stay fit? What do you do to keep active during working hours? Thoughts? Gud thoughts, I once worked somewhere [the source better b anonymous], for 8 months. When I quit, I had a serious back problem! As yet, am still working in a seated position, 8 hours working days, 5 days a week!! Those are so many hours in a week!! Mayb its the nature of the jobs we do, nothing much we can do to change! Problem identified! Now we just need the solution! We gang up as techies and negotiate a good deal with a good gym - situated next to a good pub! Once identified (in a location convenient for everyone) all techies report to this gym 3x a week for 2 hours team workout, then go into the pub to ventilate/exhale. If you miss 1 str8 week you pay a fine!! It has to be enforced! -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

There is a gym after Westy allowed for Safcom guys. I tried to join (so that we can be posing there with other like minded engineers as we await the traffic jam on James Gichuru to kwish) - but they semad Safcom has locked out non-safcom staff from getting memberships.. [?] :-( And most of them dont even attend it [?]

For me there is no excuse for not exercising and more especially given the kind of work we do. Most of us work for long hours and adopt very poor eating habits. 5 years ago I decide to change my lifestyle in various ways. I make sure I exercise at least 3 times a week and for me I do it in the morning. I usually leave home at around 5.45AM and go straight to a club play a game of squash from around 6.00AM to 7.15Am and then take a shower and go to work. To me this saves me the morning traffic hustles and by the time i get in office I'm fresh and ready to work for 8-9 hours non-stop. I prefer carrying packed lunch and can work the whole day without even a lunch break. Try doing it in the morning and you'll never regret. to On 2/4/2011 6:04 PM, Gregory Okoth wrote:

I doubt his social life would have paved way to a successful political career) and more of what I don't prefer to be but is forced by peer pressure to adopt so that I fit in. * gym .... expensive affair, and what do you know .. im starting to get noticed by ladies who keep asking how much I earn every month, good thing I now walk upright * pretend to love football ... whats running in my mind constantly "Hooray, he's kicked the ball. Now the ball's over there. That man has the ball. That's an interesting development. Maybe he'll kick the ball. He has indeed. Apparently that deserves a round of applause." * Liquor ..... you can always have it and engage in a pointless conversation/argument with anyone, without having necessarily considering it as a waste of time! also renders the kryptonite ineffective @Wash... good idea! the pub can serve as a front for installation parties - Install FreeBSD 5, build a router/firewall and then use a known exploit to compromise it - One short of tequila for every 5 minutes spent. Here are some tips to increase physical activity at work - Standing up to take phone calls - Walking to see a colleague rather than phoning or emailing - Having standing meetings or encouraging regular breaks during meetings for people to stand up - Going to a bathroom on a different level - Centralising things such as rubbish bins and printers so that you need to walk to them - Taking the stairs instead of the lift where possible. And now another skunk has made it possible for movies to be delivered to my desk! Aki, Alvin *et al* allow me to window shop for computer stuff from my desk. KPLC allows me to pay stima still from my desk, and so does NWSC. My bank emails me bank statements and allows me to access my stash from my desk! Soon I will be *** and *** from my desk! :-) Take today off, go to the roof of KICC and take some pictures.

For how long do you sit at one stretch? Is all the sitting taking a toll on your body? Does company management encourage you to stay fit? What do you do to keep active during working hours? Thoughts?

I sit for long for sure. But I usually do home exercises like sit-ups press-ups cycling and when I am walking in the streets of Nairobi, I do it briskly. That at least helps my cardio. I also try to skip lunches as much as I can. Other than that, I guess I'm as screwed as every other techie. Regards.
