Whether they use fuel, charcoal, green bananas or tobacco is neither here nor there. Do bakeries also charge for electricity to bake the bread on top of the bread itself? @Brainiac - the fuel cost is the cost of running that generator they decided to use to produce elec. @Rad - Bakeries do actually factor in the cost of elec used to bake in coming up with the final price of the loaf (I believe it falls somewhere under the COGS) Thats why the cost of everything goes up when the fuel/elec costs go up. -Billy

My Neighbour generates his own electricity using wind. I don't know what he tells the KPLC/KENGEN guys. But its enough to supply to his massive house and a few homes he owns in in compound. My cousin installed these new prepaying electricity meters, only to revert again to the "old" meters. I don't know why but I guess cost was the contributing factor. Question is, are you charged "fuel Costs" for these new meters?
the problem with the new meters from what i hear has to do with availability of air time. Plus the fact that you load airtime today for use beginning tomorrow. wind is very versatile, and if you are located somewhere with good speeds (over 5m/s avg), youre into something real good. @ Clement and Brainiac, I use the pre paid meters. Cost is the same. Fuel levy is still double the consumption. I have no problem getting airtime. Uchumi hyper Ngong road sorts me out just nicely. I have used Mpesa to load electricity so if need be, you can always use it (you can load sh 500 electricity when things are thick!).The big advantage for me is that you can monitor your consumption easily and take necessary action. All in all I prefer prepaid to post paid. Is it possible that your cousin's postpaid bill was deducted from his prepaid 'electime' hence creating the impression of higher consumption. If you have an outstanding postpaid bill before consumption, your prepaid purchase is used to offset this. Don't know what rate they use though. I don't think it is illegal. I remember seeing a feature on TV a while back about some fellas in central who had created their own small mini-hydroelectric power plant using a small river and they were lighting up a village.
What might require regulation is becoming a commercial power generator.

They take advantage of the fact that set up costs for solar are high. Including other barriers like if you are renting then modifying the house is a long and expensive story. Best way to evaluate 'useful cost ' of a panel is consider indicated output, mean effective lifespan and cost. Youll quickly realize solar panels are not that costly considering other parameters. One thing i dont understand is how my bill comes to 1600/- every month when I have a fridge, a tv set six lights in a one bedroom apartment (of course energy savers) and I use an iron box every morning to iron one shirt and one trouser....besides using a laptop on week ends....????
