Just sharing this : Impressed with Orange 3g ( HSDPA/UMTS ) network.....

I finally got the Orange 3g network working after purchasing the flybox @ a new price of Ksh12,999/-, purchased the 10GB bundle @4,999/-. At the moment am doing 315 to 384KB/sec downloads to an ubuntu test download in the uk! Like totally impressed, hope they don't slow it down after this email..... just goes to show and proves that when things are done correctly, the sky is the limit. :-) I also managed to get the HSPA+ ( the new 21Mbps network ) working on the Orange USB modem, the speeds were relatively slower than expected @ around 80-140KB/sec so almost on par with the regular 3g networks. Hope Orange will tweak the HSPA network to exceed speeds of regular 3g. Rgds.

And just for the record to show what is possible on a 3g nework, am now recording download speeds of around 474KB/sec to the same ubuntu test download server on the uk. That 474KB/sec = 3.2Mbps! The network latencies are very stable, 0% packet losses and max latencies of 400ms. Youtube streaming is like playing back downloaded clips, no buffering at all. If Orange is on skunks, can we please get 800KB/sec and more on the HSPA+ network ( 21Mpbs network ) ? Rgds. Over and out. On Sun, Jan 8, 2012 at 11:37 AM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

Ok, been testing the Orange 3g network, its been streaming 100% without buffering and holds the network speeds. So if Orange hold this level of services on its network, what an pure achievement. At one point I was able to get upto 560KB/sec = over 3.6Mbps! Ubuntu ISO test file 695MBytes took 25minutes to download. Well Done Orange, there is definately a differentiating factor. A guitar is guitar for many as so is data networks. The guiter is innovative too, this guy turned play the guitar into something else totally and many have tried to copy but failed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SRpu_4ccZo&feature=related Done with my comments. :-)

OK, testing this morning in another area within the Hurlingham area and Orange 3g ( not evdo ) is clocking a steady *540KB/sec download speeds* to the UK ubuntu test download mirror site using the Orange flybox. That 540KB/sec = very close to 7Mbps!!!. I've also tested to a number of other download sites and the results match very closely. *Is this the dawn of a new era in the 3g data delivery? If so, Orange have just broken the speed barriers that we have been so limited to. ( 40-160KBps ).*

Been using it for a while now in Westlands and Kileleshwa. When it works the speeds are great. Though I must say some days seems the service just slows down for no apparent reason. But the speeds are great. ====================== Andrew Wafula Wapakala Web: www.wertsoft.com MSN: a_wafula@hotmail.com MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/awafula Blog: http://thewert.blogspot.com/ ========================================================================== If you have made mistakes...there is always another chance for you... you may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call 'failure' is not the falling down, but the staying down. - Mary Pickford "Great Minds Discuss Ideas; Average Minds Discuss Events; Small Minds Discuss People" On Mon, Jan 9, 2012 at 9:44 AM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

The best I've seen is Safaricom with the Huawei E1820 HSPA stick - clocks a max of 800KB/s or better on a good day. This is a shot of the best I've seen: [image: Screenshot at 2012-01-06 21:57:44.png]

@One, seems Orange is improving their new 21Mbps network (HSPA ) and am currently doing a stable 805KB/sec = close to 6.5Mbps!! and my computer is swallowing MBytes like as if its chewing bytes rather. :-))) Download time for 300Mbytes file = 7 Minutes!! Go Orange Go!! I really wish they can stabilize at 1000KB/sec :-)) BTW, I like Safcom too and have not tried their HSPA network, will do soon. Thnks for sharing that info on Safcom. Over and Out. My only issue with Orange is the menus for topping up and buying data bundles, they seem to be so error prone, with no confirmation of the choice you took. - On one occasion, on EVDO, the signal was so weak that it took almost half an hour to top up and buy bundles, the issue ws tahts I would buy Ksh 850 for 1 GB , but by the time I finished topping up, I would have less than Ksh 800, and would need to top up again to buy the bundle. - Using the #123# menu, I mistakenly bought an unlimited bundle rather than an MB bundle, as the choices were 2 and 3 , and my fat thumb selected option 3 which doesn't even confirm the purchase , but acknowledges that you have bought "7 day unlimited Internet that is capped at 500 Mb for KSh 990". Orange also have a 500 MB bundle at Ksh 500. The above though are policy issues which can be settled overnight. For the moment though, I have learned it is safer to call customer care , ask them to top up your line and to buy you a bundle.

@Dennis, the new USB modem by Orange ( MF192 ) has been built very well. The installer Windows/Mac/Linux software does immediate tops-ups, balance checks and bundle purchases immediately. I've tested both on Windows and Mac and restricted use to only 3g, works extremely well. Orange have definately improved on network coverage because the same places am testing from had very small signal levels before. Now if only they can comeup with larger topup cards, its prettyy annoying to topup say 7,000 with seven cards!. On the Orange Flybox, they have included an SMS interface in the Web Admin so you do not need to remove the sim card and manually top up. All you do is go to your browser, type in http://192.168.1.1 and enter with a password. Then, go to the SMS interface and you can top up. I used to find this restrictive in the earlier Safcom E960 modem but they also improved it on the B220 modem. Orange also provide a normal RJ11 cable with the Flybox, so you can connect a normal phone to this line. The Flybox also has a single Ethernet port which one can connect to a switch. The Flybox is, IMO, using the same OS used in the E960/B220 wifi routers, but customised to Orange. These 3g routers perform extremely well under multiple sessions. If anyone wants to use the Open 3g routers, my advice is don't. These do not have the processing capacity and give very awkard results. Here are my basic amatuer tests on using the Orange Flybox 3g( HSDPA/HSUPA ): - Part of Westlands = 450KB/sec download speeds while upto 90KB/sec on upload speeds. Signal level = full - Part of Hurlingham = 400-500KB/sec download speeds while upto 100KB/sec on upload speeds. Signal level = full - Part of South C = 400KB/sec download speeds while upto 80KB/sec on upload speeds. Signal level = from 70% to full. - Planned testing in other areas too this week and next. This may just be also helpful in monitoring KPLC when the time comes....... Rgds. :-) On Tue, Jan 10, 2012 at 10:37 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello Aki, Are these speeds Average? does the session keep on breaking ... I usually use Safcom sometimes to connect on VPN but it will keep on dropping and its very annoying and it does not rec-connect I have to keep on rec-connecting manually. Has anyone tested the flybox in Ngong' ? I curently use Safaricom Huawei E160, signal is good, some download speeds reach 2Mbps. Any suggestions on better options I can use within the Ngong' area? Thanks and regards, Ian On 10 January 2012 11:12, Watson Kambo <wkwats@gmail.com> wrote:

More good news to share. This thread was originally about the Orange 3g network and the flybox, which have established the 300-400KB/sec network data rates so far and is impressive enough. Now, the *Orange 21Mbps HSPA+ (?) network* ( using the black USB modem model 192 ) is also doing wonders which initially some weeks ago did not go down too well. Orange has definately rolled out this network quite well and the signal improvements are very evident. What is the distinct advantage of this new network? Normal 3g uplink is limited to 32KB/sec Uploads transfers by design, but the Orange network HSPA+ is doing these numbers below: - Speeds recorded today around Hurlingham area = DL : 500-820KB/sec UL : 60-90KB/sec ( signal level : 90-100% ) - Speeds recorded today around Westlands area = DL : 400-600KB/sec UL: 50-70KB/sec ( signal level : 90-100% ) - Speeds recorded around HillView area = DL: 500-700KB/sec UL : 50-70KB/sec ( signal level : 70-90% ) I don't have the technical details of the Orange network nor indepth information of what version of 3g has been implemented ( whether HSUPA/HSPA+ ) but it would be worth reading about. On comparison to other 3g operators who have been giving miserable speeds of 20-140KB/sec which in these days communication standards can be considered as slow as Dialup Up Networks, my pledge to Orange is to sustain the new level of high speeds that are currently being seen on their network. This is truly ground breaking and some of us may just revive hopes creating projects around multi-media or video conferencing systems or platforms. Listers, I think we are definately ushering in a new era of true broadband mobility with Orange 3g on both the HSDPA and HSPA+ versions of the network. Rgds.

I confirmed that the "unlimited" "7 day" bundle I bought last Friday hit the 500 MB limit on Wednesday evening, and I was promptly disconnected. So , yes, the "unlimited" bundle on phone is limited to 500 Mb, and here we thought Safaricom was been cheeky with unlimited

Over the last 3 days I've transacted 13+GB on the Safaricom's UnlimitedWeekly bundle, even with bandwidth throttling in place. I suspect Orange's bundle is a Fair Usage policy capped at 500MB and not unlimited. All Safaricom's unlimited bundles: UNLIMITEDDAILY, UNLIMITEDWEEKLY and UNLIMITEDMONTHLY are not volume capped, but are bandwidth capped. ./bernard On Fri, Jan 13, 2012 at 9:47 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

I am still wondering why Orange has another 500 MB bundle priced at Ksh 500, besides the "unlimited one", plus do they have that much customers to come up with "Fair usage policies"

Fair Usage, the way its been done here, is a major fail in many mature markets. Even Safaricom tried it out but lasted just over a month. This market has matured enough to move away from such into exciting service-based packages. They should learn how 3 has done it in the UK: goo.gl/i5lJR and goo.gl/CXbY9 ./bernard On Fri, Jan 13, 2012 at 2:18 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:
