Have you noticed that so many sites nowadays that offer "free" software downloads always require the user to login or register before he/she can "freely" download any software? First, I don't understand how my login/registration helps them make money or whatever Secondly, most users on being required to login will most probably look for another site that doesn't require the login or registration, which beats whatever purpose they were trying to achieve.. It's frustrating coz all I want is the software then I move on with life. And what assurance do I have that they won't start sending me spam??

Well, it's ok to register if what you're getting is worth it; they have to be in business. Of course they need a list for marketing purposes; that's how they make money. But OpenId is here!! plus other technologies... so, if all the websites implement OpenId (I admit I'm yet to but will soon), the question of a 'lengthy signup' and many usernames/passwords is solved; should be a better compromise and option; On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 12:16 PM, Shiro Njagi<sheeroh@gmail.com> wrote:

@shiro, i can think of ten reasons for them wanting you to register: 1: thats 3 (or more) pageviews for their site, and traffic is good for whoever wants to convince his (or HER) advertisers to advertise. 2: You will give them a working email address, that will register as a "hit" in their email campaigns, whether they register or not. 3: They might want to contact you in future to tell you that the free script they gave you is full of malware and has wiped out your data, so now go download another one to replace it ... 4: who said ten reasons? thats probably it, unless mna ya kuongeza. Shiro, I can also add; 5. Value; a few years ago an "unconfirmed" email address could be resold for about 10 cents US, and a "confirmed" one for 25 cents US. By registering, you're "confirming" your email address and raising it's value. So there's no reassurance that it will not be resold to spammers. 6. Spambots; by registering, you're confirming that you're human, not a bot in someone's registration roll. "Captchas<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA>" also work the same way. I think there's more negative results than positive ones for kawaida users, so BugMeNot is probably a good idea. Erick On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 5:40 AM, Areba Collins <arebacollins@gmail.com>wrote:

I guess they should have switched to Open ID by now. I would rather use open ID than maintain a database of users, but again, several coders love it the hard way 2009/7/14 Erick NNN <erickarn@gmail.com>

@ash, I understand the web can be quite a jungle for some... but just like any other place, people who make positive contribution are always needed; and we owe it to them. Those that contravene best practices have nothing to be proud about! I think bugmenot.com is in this category. Blame it on the list administrator. This list is _very_ public. Even the archives are public. No authentication is required to access them so I wouldn't be surprised if the list content appeared elsewhere than afraha.com. For the afraha.com owner, I think s/he simply subscribed an address (no offense in doing that) and then gets the posts fed to a script which does the rest. Correct me if I am wrong but there is nothing that bars anyone from reproducing the contents on this list anywhere, or even doing *something* with the said content. Shouldn't you guys look into those aspects first before screaming about non-existent violation? :-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

The problem here is did the Skunkworks moderator(s) approve the contents on SW to be 'mirrored' on afraha.com? If so, how did that happen without our knowledge. While afraha.com owner was not in any way going against privacy of individuals (maybe (s)he just wanted to make the SWs stuff known to the wider audience!) but then what is the meaning of privacy, if one can be subscribed a site/ forum without their consent? wherever the problem is - email addresses MUST never be displayed the way they are displayed both the archives and on afraha - so it's like you say, Collins is picking a feed which is wrongly formatted - I think he should first boycott picking the feed until it is properly formatted - or if it, format it properly - otherwise, evil squared is still evil. ./Ok3ch On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 2:40 PM, Jacob Odada <jacob.odada@gmail.com> wrote:

Okechukwu, Even Mailman (what is used here) when not specifically configured to apply the little obfuscation it does to your e-mail address on the archives, will display your e-mail address as-is. That aside, there is nowhere (could have been part of the footer on all the posts) on this list where there's proclaimed such prohibition. Hi, We've implemented *obscure_addresses* (privacy): on the the List Setting this option causes member email addresses to be transformed when they are presented on list web pages (both in text and as links), so they're not trivially recognizable as email addresses. The intention is to prevent the addresses from being snarfed up by automated web scanners for use by spammers. 2009/7/14 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

The biggest problem IN MY OPINION as techies is the fact that we tend to be elitist. The fact that collins mirrored the content has made some of us even use curses. Apart from the fact that email addresses were displayed which is not even an issue to blame Collins, what is so wrong in the content being mirrored that some of us have to start raising legal issues concerning privacy? This is not a members only club but a forum that should serve a purpose. EDUCATION and COOPERATION 2009/7/14 Eric Magutu <emagutu@gmail.com>

As i said, I am removing this as a matter of courtesy, so just hold your hoses. Ill comment on security though: 1: @ERIC: I find the security you are referring to rudimentary, two lines of code and i have all email addresses i need. If you look keenly, emails on afraha are converted to images. The Obscure addresses you are referring to are basically a "find and replace" thing, which means reverse engineering will give me the original email. Here is a quick one which gave me about 200 email addresses. a) Go to the list archives and download the .tar.gz of the list. b) open the text file: and do a find replace for " at " with "@" then do that to all and tell me what you see. Now, opensource scripts like sphider (cant remember the url) have everything ready and virtually all you need is to modify code to look for an at and replace with @ and you have everything. Onto the matter of copyright and ownership, I would love some enlightenment on ownership of content in my mailbox. esp with relation to the Media Bill. (and this is just a debate, not an expresson of impunity). @ Washington, back to you. On 7/14/09, Eric Magutu <emagutu@gmail.com> wrote:

I am still yet to understand what the issue is. This forum according to my understanding was meant to be used by techies to share ideas and problems. That is why subscription is open to anyone. Is there anything so special about what we say that other people should not be able to see. I believe local content should be broadcasted on all available fora so that people can know Kenya has an active group of techies. I see no problem with afraha. Collins do your thing. I noticed the mirror a while ago but only contacted the publisher yesterday. If you ask me? All that Collins is doing is what many others do out there but they never let the world know about it. On this list we have 'researchers', telcos reps, software marketers, , developers, websites marketers, ... even politicians - big deal! Somebody said that the best way to treat 'privacy' on public e-spaces is: "Put down in e-form only that which you can repeat in front of your mother, or write down on a post card" nice an simple. Therefore, next time you a re sending that SMS or email, ask yourself "can I repeat this in front of my mother?" should do the trick :) Relax guys, Alex On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 12:16 PM, Steve Obbayi<steve@sobbayi.com> wrote:

Isn't the whole point of Skunkworks sharing information widely? So why all these calls for the admins heads? It's like some people here want a third envelope forwarded to Ocampo! Everything you share on here is meant to be exactly that - shared! For crying out loud, this list even has RSS Feeds if I remember correctly. OK the point about email harvesters is valid - but all the noise about restricting the archives is very dangerous. Most posters seem to understand this already, there are numerous posts where the person writing the email says "I have noticed something dangerous/illegal etc but I will not post the link" or they attack coding problems from Proof of Concept angles rather than taking down the whole of .ke! So relax and yes we do expect you to stand by your words! Accountability! On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 5:52 PM, Gakuru Alex <alexgakuru.lists@gmail.com>wrote:

@Were In a sense you are right, but information, in this context doesn't include my contact details. Besides, the people interested in obtaining this information should subscribe to the list, rather than get it from 'backdoor' sources. My 100 cents worth.. [I'm not so cheap as to give two cents!!!] Rgds, Me. 2009/7/15 Daudi Were <daudi.were@gmail.com>
