Orange 3G vs Airtel 3G

So I decided to run some tests on the above. I bought Orange 1GB bundle at 750/= and also subscribed to Airtels UnLimiNet with 1K which gives me 2GB. Been running tests and perception tells me Orange seems faster than Airtel. I have tested from two locations and it seems that whatever I do loads faster on Orange than on Airtel. However, when I try to get to anything on Safaricom and other local providers from these two, then it's another story - and here I thought that they all should be having big pipes at KIXP. Anyway, ignore this whole line. For those of you who have used these two, would you recommend Orange or Airtel??? Going by what I can remember being discussed on this list, methinks Orange has it when it comes to speeds, right?? The only advantage I am seeing on UnlimiNet is the voice/sms bundles that come with it. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 "I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler."

Hi Wash, I think comparing Airtel's unliminet and Orange bundle is wrong. The unliminet package has some fair usage policy which slows data. Get a data bundle from Airtel and compare with The Orange one. Hi Job, Thanks for that. I have Airtel Postpaid line too (I don't buy bundles) and having used it before, I still feel Orange is faster. I think now I should do some speedtests. 1. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4244913677 (Using Orange data bundle) 2. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4244923447 (Using Airtel Postpaid - pay-as-you-go) I am still happy with Orange speeds... Thanks for that. I have Airtel Postpaid line too (I don't buy bundles) and having used it before, I still feel Orange is faster.
I think now I should do some speedtests.

Hi Wash,
I think comparing Airtel's unliminet and Orange bundle is wrong. The unliminet package has some fair usage policy which slows data. Get a data bundle from Airtel and compare with The Orange one.

None that I know of. My place in Pangani has adequate cover for all operators. Orange still fairs better. Ditto Mombasa & Kilifi. All I recall is that at launch, Airtel 3G connection in Mombasa was way better than the same in Nairobi. Tony.

Maybe Airtel Throttle regardless of location? Could be due to their focus on mobile as opposed to modems as Orange seems to favour. On Tue, Mar 31, 2015 at 5:42 PM, Tony Likhanga via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

It's confirmed! They are shutting down the entire CDMA network. They are currently migrating all the affected customers onto the GSM network. Depending on your data usage history, you may be eligible for a device subsidy on a replacement GSM modem. Trust these clowns not to effectively communicate important info... sigh! Tony.

I don't understand this mobile vs modem issue with Orange. How do they differentiate a mobile from a modem? Why is it even important? I know I can use the same SIM card on a mobile or modem. So when Orange asks me whether I want to activate on a mobile or modem, I just can't figure out the need for such a question. Naomba serikali hii yetu tukufu ya nyegere inielimishe, plis. *<SiriSioKaliSpeak>* Device differentiation can be done using the IMEI number. I think the question is a vestige of their past blunders and probably some crappy platform. See, in the past, Orange had those juicy "unlimited" packages that were priced differently for each type of access device (modem/handset/tablet etc). Their general assumption was that there was some practical data consumption ceiling associated with each type device. Now, their crappy system would provision you to the relevant package but make no subsequent follow-up on what access device you would use thereafter. Additionally, their platform had major frequent hitches in enforcing the data limits. Folks would purchase the 50/= daily bundle available only from a handset, then pop the SIM card into a modem. Voila! Suddenly you got full-speed internet for 24 hours for just 50/= I guess, as a work-around, they may later have decided to permanently lock the purchased bundles onto some fixed profile - hence the query. I suppose there are better solutions to managing data bundles that are intelligent enough to spare us those unnecessary questions during provisioning. *</SiriSioKaliSpeak>* Tony.

Hello Tony, Thanks for the education. All along, i have always believed that IMEI is a 16-digit number and no portion of it identifies the device as phone, tablet, modem, etc. Now I know. How they do it, lemme gugu:) Or just go ahead and explain to me. On 2 April 2015 at 12:30, Tony Likhanga via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I think the biggest issue is cost. Orange have to really think hard if they want to keep investing in a GSM network and a separate CDMA network. Guess GSM is cheaper due to more users. It also reduces needing to have two (or three of everything including landlines). On Thu, 2 Apr 2015 at 13:08 Tony Likhanga via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

At one point Orange, a CDMA operator thought they had a future in UMB (Ultra Mobile Bandwidth), the LTE equivalent for GSM operators, but they don't. With Safaricom aggressively rolling out 4G, Orange have to step up their game before this aggressive prelude to Safaricom's way of "trading atoms, and doing a good job at it, hate it or love it " gets higher download quotas and eventually paves way to affordable 4G internet prices.
