For those talking about location, is there any place where Airtel has outdone Orange in your tests so far?

None that I know of. My place in Pangani has adequate cover for all operators. Orange still fairs better. Ditto Mombasa & Kilifi.

All I recall is that at launch, Airtel 3G connection in Mombasa was way better than the same in Nairobi.
