I remember this study too. I bet as the cost of fuel fluctuates, so is the figure, because fuel consumption was a major factor. The "time" part of the calculation should be almost constant if the factors that were considered aren't changing. <http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/kazi/general> -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

An average Nairobian stays in a jam for two hours on a normal working day. Depending on your car How much will you spend on fuel for the two hours you are in a jam? How much space are you accupying with your car?(Distance from one car to the next) How many passengers in your car? How much can you achieve in two hours?(1:: Read a whole bunch of newspapers, 2::Read all your emails(Assuming you have like 50 of them) 3::Pray and read (for Christians)-a whole book(eg Romans))).

This is very approximate - but you'll get the idea: A car, carrying average 2 people, with a ground area of 8 square metres, needs 4 sq m per person A nissan matatu, carrying 14, area 10 sq m, only uses 0.7 sq m per person So - matatus are about 6 times more efficient at moving people than cars. According to a former/current NCC Town Clerk (in an article a few years back): - average occupancy for private cars in Nairobi is 1.2 - private cars make up about 70% of the traffic in Nairobi I once thought of creating a neighbourhood-based, SMS-verificiation carpool application so avg. occupancy can be pushed-up (and costs for car owners pushed down). But a friend told me Nairobians will never share their cars, not even with their neighbours (even if it benefits the car owner as well). The reasons were many, but chief among them was the "dilution of status". I don't know how true this is but it sorta made sense and promptly discouraged the idea. The reasons were many, but chief among them was the "dilution of status".
I agree with the "dilution of status" theory -- also perhaps a reason why motorcycle usage is very low as a means for personal transport.

Motocycle travelling in nairobi city is suicidal,i would ride but ive lost a few pals .Motorists seem not to respect motorcyclists in kenya you have to be brave. Plus the council has restrictions on PSV motocycles in the city center..... On Wed, Jan 6, 2010 at 9:19 AM, <ashok+skunkworks@parliaments.info<ashok%2Bskunkworks@parliaments.info>

It isnt really suicidal if you don't drive in a suicidal manner (many PSV motorcycle riders do drive like that). How do you explain large scale adoption of motorcycles in cities of other developing nations with more homicidal traffic ?
Plus the council has restrictions on PSV motocycles in the city center.....
is that so ? i use a motorbike most of the time -- i have never had a problem with the city council (though my motorbike is not a PSV :-) )

refer to PSV part, ie no boda bodas in nairobi like in kampala. A relative tried to introduce them and met barriers.

@ Saidi, Consider this "You text for a plumber in Umoja to a number, you get a list of persons near/and or in Umoja who are plumbers. How will you verify that they are what they say they are ?" Carpools are a bit complicated in Kenya Especially when you don't know your neighbour at all. How can you know whether you are being carried by a thug and/or carrying a thug? A carpool app, can help ease traffic jams in Kenya, only that you just don't know whom to trust.

@ongera, i disagree, - 4 of my neighbours have cars (nissan van, mitsubishi double-cab, suzuki vitara, toyota g-touring) - they have lived together (as neighbours) for minimum 3 years, spend lots of weekends together, so they must know each other pretty well - yet each day, the four vehicles will be stuck in jams - (nissan: 1 pax (dere pekee), mits dcab: 2 pax, suzuki: 1 pax, toyota: 2 pax). sad FACT: they all work in the CBD. - the disinterest in carpools has more to do with status (or its dilution) than (lack of) trust or any other silly excuse. ~ imo ~ On Wed, Jan 6, 2010 at 11:15 AM, Clement Ongera <cnongera@gmail.com> wrote:

I disagree Many times after work i prefer to be flexible to pass by a friends, joint or shop. If i carpool, this flexibility is taken away. That i believe is more a factor than dilution. Ive never minded giving a neighbour a lift. When i moved in i would try and realised everyone doesnt work in my direction so it was pointless to offe On Wed, Jan 6, 2010 at 12:37 PM, MotoBaridi <motobaridi@gmail.com> wrote:

I use a motorbike on weekdays for work errands and drive on weekends. Most of the cars I pass 'parked' on the road usually have 1 person in it. A motorbike is not suicidal, would you refuse to take a bath out of the fear of slipping in the tub? Yes it has its risks but is cheaper to use than a bus and more convinient than a car.
