@Murigi, for some people like me who are studying C #.net and probably a hobbyist for another 2-4 years, can you please clarify why should one focus more on asp.net ( web applications ) rather than windows forms applications. I personally see the web as something that is harmful to programming as it is very limiting but I may be mistaken. Is the web going to merge with desktop anytime soon? Will contact you offlist on the above, but I've listed my questions incase others are also thinking along the same lines.... Cheers.

I would not lose sleep over this issue. People have been predicting the death of desktop applications for the last 10 years. We're still waiting. Like all things there is room for both. Web applications have certain advantages - ease of deployment, no OS restrictions etc. Desktop applications have theirs too -- offline use, integration with hardware, leveraging of local resources, etc. I don't think it's a question of focusing more. I think any good developer should pick up skills on both fronts On Thu, Dec 3, 2009 at 9:47 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Aki, You are not mistaken about web or desktop apps. We use desktops apps (web browsers) to access the web. Kenyans such as the geek behind http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chasys_Draw_IES can start a Windows Graphics C/C++ Club ...

The web as harmful to programming? Please expound further coz that is a very interesting observation Aki. And i think the coalition between web and desktop may already have happened, in the name of Adobe Air <http://www.adobe.com/products/air/comparison/>. However, like Rad! said, the desktop ain't dying anytime soon.

I also believe that both are here for a long while yet. desktop can leverage local resources in ways web can't, while web is flexible, deployment easier etc etc. IMHO, as a developer you need to have a basic grasp of at least one and master the other. Hallo @Peter, I've got a tiny background on older systems i.e .asp and access. The main reason i think web is anti-programming is that most of the programming language enhancements will never be fully utilized. Therefore, you find that vendors are writing newer ways to deal with the issue. Hobbyist view? Pls correct as necessary. :-)
