I personally see the web as something that is harmful to programming as it is very limiting but I may be mistaken. Is the web going to merge with desktop anytime soon?

And i think the coalition between web and desktop may already have happened, in the name of Adobe Air. However, like Rad! said, the desktop ain't dying anytime soon.
