1. That the thugs (yes, thugs) were armed 2. That these thugs always have no mercy on their victims 3. That only licensed citizen, other than the disciplined forces, should carry a firearm 4. That if these thugs are taken to court, there is normally no sufficient proof to warrant conviction so they get away with it 5. That between the Police and these thugs, it's either cooperation (collusion) or fire.

The thugs kill innocent Kenyans almost daily and the only thing the media does it to blame the Police for it. When Police kill the thugs, the media still blames the Police for it. When the thugs kill the Policemen, still the Police take blame.

Who will stand up for the Police?

I am of the opinion that, in the absence of the death sentence in Kenya, there is no better way to deal with thugs than letting Police execute them, especially when the thugs are found to carry weapons. It's where the society has placed the Police. We should have a law that deals punitively with anyone found in possession of an unlicensed weapon.

@Aki, Set up? doesn't look like or smell like one. To me those cops are a bunch police trigger happy guys who care less about anyone or anything but their 'job'. It all happened in a traffic jam so the photographer had all the time to take the shots. If anything those were thugs and got what they deserved! Wash You are very right but will should also put down measures to check the police lset they take advantage and be the thugs, that is for example, if i want Wash out of my way I just ask for the protected polices' assistance read pay them and the headline will read "There was a fire exchange, He was orderd to surender, and he was guned down". Before you experience these guys first hand (either yourself or through a relative) you will always blame the police.

There is already in place laws to deal with misuse of firearms by officers of the disciplined forces. Within these setups, there are very strict ways for accounting for any weapons used (read bullets), and internal processes are there to determine if such use is legal. Now, the problem in Kenya is the proliferation of arms from neighboring countries. Civilians can easily acquire guns as you've seen sometime back in the media. Despite this being known, no single effort has been put into revising the existing laws to update them to reflect (and cater for) this situation. However, we all look up on the Police to protect us. Before they protect us, they must ensure that they are protected. How do they protect themselves? How many policemen have you heard were killed through shooting by "thugs"? I do admit there are thugs in uniform who are paid to kill their own (Drug barons are known to do this when some officers fail to toe their line) but that is not the focus of this debate. Let's not veer off the road. I still maintain that it is right for police to execute anyone in possession of a firearm is that person(s) is not licensed to carry a firearm and is not a member of the disciplined forces.

Alternative is to have a law that declares every such person to be a "voluntary soldier". If they are caught, they are tried under Court Martial and the penalty is the firing squad. The law needs to cater for such a firing squad to be active. That is my solution.

While railing on the police for executing these armed thugs, let us also take a minute and relive the ordeals an ordinary citizen goes through in the hands of these armed thugs. Which one is more immoral? The armed thugs or the executioner policemen? I bear a mark on my head, just above the ear, thanks to a gun muzzle a thug unleashed on me one day when I was carjacked!

9 Dec 2009: my cousin Martin is jacked by thugs, who then abandon him and jack a couple. They take his car keys. Neighbours who respond to the alarm, and some two APs, determine he's not one of the thugs when they search him and his car. A few minutes later, regulars come and shoot him four times at point-blank range. On 11th Dec I identify his body at City Morgue, and when we inquire further, the coverup story is that there was a shootout, another story that he had an AK, another one that he had a pistol, then another story that he was running away (never mind all the entry wounds are up front, and there were eyewitnesses) etc....

October 2010: Nganga Kariuki and his sister are carjacked at gunpoint. They're cornered by cops, the thugs bolt, but the cops still spray the car with bullets and kill the 23-year old and injure his sister.

November 2010: Rachel Nduta (a friend and Family Bank employee) is attacked by thugs who abandon her car and bundle her into the one they've already jacked. They're cornered, she identifies herself and pleads to be spared, but the cops shoot her over 10 times point blank. They also do the same to the owner of the car she was in.

These are all people I knew personally, dead at the hands of police, within one year. In all these cases, they were innocent, and had the cops arrested them and verified their story, they'd be alive today. I'm not trying to exonerate the guys who were killed, but all I'm trying to say here is that whenever you read in the news that some "notorious elements" were shot dead "after engaging my boys in a shootout", take it with a pinch of salt.

About taking in viewer feedback, practically every show on every channel ends with contact info for getting in touch and I can tell you, most people do not. In the few instances when they do, they mostly ask for contacts of someone featured on those shows. On Money Matters for instance, we get just about 5 emails a week that are of suggestions about what to have on the show. The rest want contacts or just write to say they like the show.

I can't say I do the best job on local TV, but I think I try my damn best not to waste our viewers' time. Please give credit where it's due.

And I welcome comments, suggestions, critiques and goofy caps.

They're cornered, she identifies herself and pleads to be spared, but the cops shoot her over 10 times point blank. They also do the same to the owner of the car she was in.

These are all people I knew personally, dead at the hands of police, within one year. In all these cases, they were innocent, and had the cops arrested them and verified their story, they'd be alive today. I'm not trying to exonerate the guys who were killed, but all I'm trying to say here is that whenever you read in the news that some "notorious elements" were shot dead "after engaging my boys in a shootout", take it with a pinch of salt.

@Larry, I'm not being picky but to be fair to you, I also followed the thread discussions on this list. I found your story on the Police Website attack quite amusing because you seemed not to have understood the story nor its impact. How on earth did you think that asking the police spokesman would help? There is such a big technology gap in govt that Im sure the ICT policies have not reached various depts or arms within the country. As a start, what should have happened is that those depts responsible for the ICT infrastructure in govt should have resigned because the website attack is similar to an attack on this country's national image. They are the ones who compromised the security issues and therefore responsible for the national embarrasment, imho. And this is excatly what @David is writing about, imo. The story of all the CEOs and mobile operators is not of interest to kenyans even if they were abusing each other, what is very key are the results that eg rates are helping kenyans achieve more economic stability. What is the economic impact to kenyans, to businesses and also the country-wide impact of such decisions? The issue here is the quality of media stories which is saturated with Safaricom, purely on the basis of Advertising spend, and there's empirical evidence on that. Are you satisfied with the media? Jeff Koinange is the only guy who conducts balanced interviews giving balanced views,so if today he was interviewing those opposed to buildings demolitions on MSA road tommorrow (or before end of week)he will interview those for it. Am afraid not the same can be said of others, sorry Larry. I agree with David,i always watch money matters and couldn't help but think same thing yesterday evening as i watched it. My 2 cents .. 1. Advertisement is not demanded by the audience/public. The demand is normally from the advertising client 2. Safaricom stories come about as a result of advertisement business volume with the individual media houses. 3. Media houses have a right to run the shows they want. They will be judged by the audience they broadcast to. And this is captured by the volume of viewers/ listeners / readers / surfers following a particular media house. We cannot dictate what they they broadcast based on volume. 4. There are various media houses. Those who feel that a certain media house is giving preference to a certain political party or subject or company for that matter .. can simple shift to another media house. Having said that, I would suggest Multichoice DSTV which comes with over 600 channels with content varying from cartoons, animal behaviour, fashion, Nigerian paranoia and my personal favourite bedroom etiquette .. Bottom line .. Demand and Supply rule ...
