@ Wash

Every programme on Tv or Radio..at the end they ask you if you have any views or comments or suggestions.

Then you can e-mail and they invite you to their face book pages.So it is inaccurate to say that media houses, dont give people a chance to make suggestions.

@ David....can Safaricom reduce their marketing expenditure because they are getting so much advertisement value equivalent? or would you ignore a competitor because he is not mentioned so much in the media? I don't think so......that is why am saying Advertisement Value Equivalent is merely a feel good data which in real sense does not mean anything.
so i will disagree with you that the stories are done purely on the basis of advertising spent.

1.Telecommunication is the fastest growing business in Kenya and one of the most dynamic industries in the world,so it is only natural for Telecommunication stories to occupy most of the space in the media.Safaricom having more than 75% market-share....it is only natural as well to be covered more than everyone else.

@MacD,

You know me better than that. The issue here is the quality of media stories which is saturated with Safaricom, purely on the basis of Advertising spend, and there's empirical evidence on that.

Are you satisfied with the media? Quality of stories. I totally disagree with Larry, can he substantiate by giving solid info on the "public demand" for safaricom related stories? I think au contre, it's justification for arm chair journalism. Aren't there business stories in Thika, Nakuru, Kisumu, is there an EPZ zone for business stories in Nairobi?

Let's stick to issues please.

@ David..... Advertisement value equivalent is a simplistic way of looking at it.

And use of keywords only, to detect mention gives distorted facts.

I know many companies buy "feel good data" which does not add value to business decision making. but its because many people don't know the difference between data and intelligence"....but that is a story for another day.

Media houses have a responsibility as a business to be market driven.And as Larry explains if the viewers demand stories about certain company,their products or their representatives...then they have to comply.

@David why do you hate Safaricom so much?

Larry,

Your response is welcome and don't take it as a personal affront. I actually have stats on the issue of press coverage given to Safaricom over two days 20th-21st Jan 2011

Find the report below, I totally disagree with you on "One of my media classes taught that media is a reflection of society. We give Safaricom loads of coverage because it is an interesting story but also because the people demand it."
