@ David, may I ask why "no flash" is a good thing? :) -- Regards Martin

That is just a personal preference, I like quick to load, easy to browse sites. Flash is good if creatively used, unfortunately that is not common with whoever does all these Joomla government sites. David. On Thu, Apr 22, 2010 at 11:26 AM, Kariuki Martin <martinkariuki7@gmail.com>wrote:

David, I do agree flash does add up some user appeal to a site. but as we have experienced some developers over using flash on and making the loading period a bit slow. i would advice anybody who is in love with flash to try and consider other channels like using xml for example to load the heavy files rather than embedding the images/files in one flash project. also ajax or creating small flash projects that have a calling to one. Interesting. I agree. And, I didn't ask that in relevance to the new beautiful parliament site. I think that the image effects on the site are better handled using other techniques. I also know of the cons that flash drags along: SEO issues, bandwidth ...e.t.c Now...on the brighter side. http://www.eabl.com/raevitup/ -- Regards Martin

That more like a cd presentation. and that's not an offense remark. the idea of having a flash for that served the purpose..its entertainment, its a one time thing, meant to facilitate the event. its light and nt a bad idea. My whole argument that is flash hasn't been put into proper practice in africa. If you look at site's like thefwa.com you would realize just how "out of the world" flash is. But I agree with you Micheal. Target audience is also key. -- Regards Martin

Am sorry but the design looks to flat and because of the current times and technology, it also falls under the unprofessional category. More work is required on it because i believe alot of resources (money, decision makers, human resource etc) were channeled to it and as a tax payer am deeply disappointed. Wilson. Guys are totally missing the point. The issue should not be how good it looks or what technologies it uses but the content. I notice there is no facility for searching the site. How?!!!! Can it tell us how many Mps attended the last parliament session? Can it tell us how many questions William Ruto has asked? Can it tell us who has not asked any questions Can it tell us how many bills are outstanding and who moved them? Can it tell us who votes yes and who voted no for the censure of Amos Kimunya? That is what a good parliament site should tell us. On Thu, Apr 22, 2010 at 12:43 PM, Wilson Bandi <bandson67@gmail.com> wrote:

Thank you for asking these. In my response to the initial post, I had to narrow down on what I had written and post only a general observation because I thought people would find what i had written as being a bit controversial:- Now you have just asked the same things I failed to ask! Wilson, your opinion is highly appreciated. Though its true alot of decision makers and human resource was put into it and apparently that's the end product. Why? you ask. PROTOCOLS. all government channels of communications ESPECIALLY for the house of chambers have to fall under certain protocols. but for now is it informative, is it capable of serving the public at large. this are the key features that are put into focus...for example how effective is the United Nations website http://www.un-kenya.org/defaultp.asp Does it serve them well and the affiliates? Wilson,
your opinion is highly appreciated.

@John I challenge that assertion right there. You cannot convince me that for a parliamentary site aesthetics are more important than content! This is precisely the thinking I think we MUST challenge the ICT board and indeed the government as a whole to change. I will not be impressed by the police site no matter how much they use flash and ajax and pictures until I can search the database to see if my missing rela has has been arrested and where he is. We need to move from the era of websites with mission & vision of & photos to the era of *service portals* where citizens can actually get not only information but actual service. Actually some guys put more weight behind the aesthetics/design/appearance than the actual content, others on security, others content etc etc...

True. Using a slightly flawed comparison model, Britannica looks better, but does not have as much content as Wikipedia, hence the latter's popularity. Hey *, Don't get me wrong - personally I'm all for useful information being top priority - I was just saying that I don't think that those who commented on the beauty/aesthetics "totally" missed the point because @the end of the day I believe the presentation of the valuable still counts for something (however small/large it may be)... Me thots, corrections welcome : Web devs and designers have done KE proud and because of them, some of them are on this list, I say this. You Rock! Look at mobile developers community, are they even worthy of mention? Despite many frameworks being available to them to develop, nothing worthy has come around besides tea parties, exchanging business cards, the promise of the vast yet non-performing apps mobile market etc. Has any Mobi Dev even comeup with a working 101 web app? :-))) Kenyan Web Devs, take things a step further as mentioned by peers because you know you can easily do it. And set a standard for those of us doing game dev, mobile dev and desktop dev. If you were hired to revamp a site, then you have done your job. If you were hired to create web tools and applications for the site, then create long term goals and get paid and get it done. Infact, the next tea party and exchanging of business cards should be done for kenyan web devs and ICT board should consider diverting funds it uses to market almost non-existent sectors to sectors that deserve it. If I could vote on vote on this, I'd give it 100% backing. The Web Dev apps sector needs all the attention and marketing it can get. You ladies/gents rock! :-)

On opening that site, I found myself instinctively opening the Members of Parliament<http://www.parliament.go.ke/parliament/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=88&Itemid=87>page to see the qualifications my MP has, I was a bit let down coz the table there, though usable, is too plain! Spice it up a bit, put on some alternate row colors, the table border could also be made a little bit better. Also, the link for viewing the MP profile aint working. The Sessional Papers page does not have content yet. The page title does not change from page to page, I think GoogleBot does not look kindly upon this. Running the home page against Pingdom Tools <http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/>to get the loading speeds of the various components, reveals interesting results, see them here: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/?url=http://www.parliament.go.ke/parliament//&i...
