Again why is the data hosted in Seattle on the SAVVIS network?. :( Does that mean if there's a cable outage today folks in Kenya will not see the live site during the launch :). Have a great morning and all the best with the launch. Regards, Michuki.

My question is why are they using socrata.com for such huge projects while we have local developers and talent that can achieve everything? David. On Fri, Jul 8, 2011 at 8:01 AM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>wrote:

@David, allow me to be the Devil's advocate. They are not using socrata.com, they are using the Socrata Platform which is like CodeIgniter, Drupal... actually, the best analogy to the Socrata Platform is DSpace. If you want to get your public data out into the public in a very short time, say 3 weeks, then you use Socrata or Factual, if you want to do the same in like 1 year, you put together a team of local developers and have them develop one. If I was in Kukubo's or Bitange's shoe's, the decision to go Socrata is a no-brainer.

That was the first thing I looked at. Truly a wonder! BUT I believe now that it is up we should SHOW them how we can build apps and populate data. It does open a door where there was previously a wall. On Fri, Jul 8, 2011 at 8:09 AM, David Mugo <raidarmax@gmail.com> wrote:

The president launching it makes a big statement to all ministries and government agencies, to you may not look big, but makes it important in the government, hence all will be dedicated to it. \ However, the president needs to come up with a way of crossing or using Uhuru Highway without causing disruptions.

I will remain negative on the hosting until someone fixes it!. Sue me if you want but am fighting for the local Mwananchi who is paying alot to access important GoK data hosted abroad!. Here's the real picture - develop apps that most common Wanjiku will never use because its costs alot to access that content. You will and i repeat you will only make profits when your traffic volume is beyond the elite folks who read this threads. That means the only day folks will afford to have internet because there will be a package that charges Kshs. 100 for unlimited local/per Month and 500 bob for International traffic on a 3G/4G service. Thats the day the apps will bring you revenue. As it stands right now, it costs Safaricom at least $300 per Mbps/Month to connect you to London. The day that price will come down to $5 per Mbps/month (where 90% of the traffic will be local). Then you can bet your apps will make you profits. The economics are simple 1Gbps from Safaricom DC to a local Peering or Datacenter vs 1Gbps from Safaricom DC to London. If Safaricom have their own infrastructure then you can calculate their link costs per month for local vs Int. So let me be negative today. You might (key word being might) thank me later. Mich.

@Michuki, did you see the reason posted on another thread as to why the data is hosted abroad? On Fri, Jul 8, 2011 at 4:13 PM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>wrote:

Would you recommend they pay several times more just so that its hosted locally? I've been looking for a reliable hosting provider whose servers are right here in town and who wont bankrupt me, only safaricom has made the cut with their 5k p/a offer. Other than co-location (and the headaches it brings), what other options do they have? On Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 7:19 PM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>wrote:

I never, would infact, i would advocate you get tax incentives for hosting locally. But am not sure KRA would take this kindly. :).
I've been looking for a reliable hosting provider whose servers are right here in town and who wont bankrupt me, only safaricom has made the cut with their 5k p/a offer.
Try by asking on this list there are a number of people who host locally that can assist you. But they are not Safaricom or anyone as big and known.
Other than co-location (and the headaches it brings), what other options do they have?
They could build their own. By the way the infrastructure to host opengovt in todays setup is hardly to 2 x 42U cabinet racks fully redundant. What we dont have is the skillset to maintain it. But hey because you cant drive do you use a taxi for the rest of your life? Regards, Michuki.

@Michuki, I am supporting you on this. Based on the complications that arise when our data is hosted outside our country it would be better if we find means and ways to host it ourselves, let us not look for shortcuts. Their are several approaches to this - The government can decide to offer major tax incentives to anyone who decides to build a data center locally - The government can decide to build its own data center to host all government services (I believe this is more appropriate for the government for purposes of security). - The government can talk with the various stakeholders (whom they use to host their data for example Google) to build a collocation center in Nairobi - Serious marketing of data centers as an investment; we have so many old rich Kenyans investing in property and this could be a new venture for them Some of the benefits that will come with it in the long run are - Creation of employment. - Improved skills among the ICT people in the country. - New sources of taxes for the government - Cheaper services etc etc Today you might enjoy amazon and the rest but in the long run as a country we need to redefine ourselves and with the coming of the cloud; it would be better we get our own or take a piece of this business for our own economy and growth. Its all about looking into the future. Regards James On Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 7:46 PM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>wrote:

This last point is what am trying to say - "Internet Real Estate!". Its all about looking into the future. After 14 years of Internet experience, i can pretty much predict what my top 5 activities on the Internet will be in 5 - 10 years time. 1) Communication & Research (read Work) - Email, chat, social networking, wikipedia, vendor, stuff, etc. Its 90% of my time now and can predict its likely to keep growing. 2) Entertainment - Most likely my movies, tv etc will come from an online service. Movie tickets, etc. 3) Shopping - too many malls, too many shops am Kenyan, i like it cheap and not enough time to go shopping around for the cheapest deals. So 50% off and such stuff online will get my attention. For now i have to make do with "Gitonga" who is my long time contact and supposedly gets me good deals. 4) Govt - From paying taxes, Driver license renewals, etc list is endless. If they get it right this would be my number 2 or 3 and thats a high rank. 5) Maps and directions - i realised with all the new road constructions, new buildings coming up - i will need a map to locate places in the coming days. So as my dependence on the above will grow - right now only 1 above is 90% of my time. Then the need for that real-estate will only increase. Hosting externally will not be efficient. Regards, Michuki.

I think I get your point now; invest in the infrastructure now instead of the amazon quick fix. I thought the govt already had some sort of data center? On Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 8:56 PM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>wrote:

Spot on.
I thought the govt already had some sort of data center?
Last time i heard the datacenter(s) were under construction. I dont know if they were completed though threads on similar discussion on Kictanet list seem to indicate that they are. Well i hope to see in the near future a tender to build, run and operate a Govt cloud based system. That would be a good start. However, in addition to the Govt DC's we need to see more facilities built. Regards, Michuki.

Nice thoughts ... but alas!!! not even a Kenyan flag or the national colors somewhere to make it have a Kenyan look? :-( On Tue, Jul 12, 2011 at 9:14 AM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>wrote:

I get your point gentle men. I particularly like the idea of having a government owned data center (Preferably in Konza) to guide the rest of us who are skeptics. The 'old rich' ok, senior citizens can even setup backup centers and new centers for cloud computing. I think I will approach one senior citizen but am still skeptical. /Bonz On Tue, Jul 12, 2011 at 11:43 AM, Gregory Okoth <gregory.okoth@gmail.com>wrote:
