What i get is that its a favor from the organization to be taken up as an intern.
From previous internship experiences. Its very rare to come across someone who will train you well. Most people hate working with interns.....unless of-course you are a very fly intern(pun intended)
From where my school of thought internship has always been baptism by fire. You are given a hot potato to handle. Only person who feels to help you is someone on the job who experienced a bad internship and is willing to make your experience better.
To some people the experience helps them to connect to the real world. To others they do not understand why i am doing calculus I & II. and now i am expected to reset someones password and connect their keyboard and mouse. IMHO. Internship is looking for cheap labor from Intelligent, innocent, fast learners with more than basic education who do not know their labor law rights. Yeah, some organization tax the internship allowance for nssf, nhif and yes.... you are not a registered member :-) Some do not insure you yet you are doing some risky @$$ work of setting up VSATs and Point to Point Radios. From where my school of thought internship has always been baptism by fire. You are given a hot potato to handle. Only person who feels to help you is someone on the job who experienced a bad internship and is willing to make your experience better.

I think calling it pay or salary is misleading. It is a stipend or consideration that the owner of the firm offrs the intern just to cushion the expenses incured. Many firms, private and parastatals i know offer some form of stipend just to be human not that the intern deserves it. Also there is a difference between an intern and an attachee. I believe the whole 'Intern Remuneration' topic has been the subject of heated debate for a while now. Here's my two cents. Its true most of the time that the allowances (if ANY) offered by some companies is way below the expectations in comparison to expenses incurred But on the other hand HR claim that training the new employees is expensive. At the end of the day we all have to 'pay our dues' before we can start earning comfortably and its up to you as an individual to decide whether the experience,cv addition,industry penetration is worth the extra struggle. I look at internship as an opportunity to also show your learning skills to a potential employer. I have had to call two interns back for employment since they showed a total willingness to learn through the hardship times, by even creating positions for them which never existed. Advise to interns, take whatever you are given, even if it is zero, for you have no idea what impressions you will leave behind. Team, This is true, I think the most important thing is to hook up the internship. You may end up actually impressing the employer and they wish to take you on. Then you bargain for better pay since you have an upper hand. It will even save you the trouble of hunting for jobs with no experience. I think the main focus always should be the opportunity. Guys I believe the internship period of about 4 months is a period where a student learns the ways of the real world away from the classroom. As a student you paid your university to study and practice the basics, now you want to learn real life application of your studies in a company that will risk you make novice mistakes on their watch and want to get paid for it? The allowances paid by companies to interns is a small token to enable them get by and its not a salary or any form of compensation. Globally from Wall Street to Nairobi interns work for free just to get a shot ay a real a life classroom. The fact that some organisations exploit interns for cheap labour is merely a side effect of the high demand for available positions. I remember with NOSTALGIA my internship days in Westie - squeezing in 3 burly chaps in a single room at the UON chiromo hostels (rented it out from a comrade at 700 per month = 230 per person), walking to work, walking back to the mess for 20 bob lunch, timing the ten oclock tea in the office for breakfast, watching office-downloaded movies kwa desktop on Friday night and cooking using "visible" 240 volts! The allowances paid by companies to interns is a small token to enable them get by and its not a salary or any form of compensation. Globally from Wall Street to Nairobi interns work for free just to get a shot ay a real a life classroom. The fact that some organisations exploit interns for cheap labour is merely a side effect of the high demand for available positions.
A real intern wants to learn and in some cases get graded for it by their college. The allowance should not be an issue.

Hi Tusker212 I see your budget but please know that some of these organization we work for are old and it takes a lot of time to change things. Again this is not a Salary and hence most organizations will shy away from anything that will go to Payroll(above 14k = Taxes) not to mention it's a win win situation both for the student and the Organization. Personally I would pay better if I had the $$$. Btw, what is internship? We maybe need to get back to basics to fully accept these facts laid here about pay. I have gotten in the wrong side with my HR department on internship, since strictly speaking, its supposed to be for students who have not graduated. If you carefully look at the HELB statutes, they actually give the student some cash for internship.
