RECOMMEND A BANK ACCOUNT THAT IS NOT FULL OF CRAP.
I hated my bank instantly when sm1 made an ATM withdrawal from my account and after reporting all they could provide is date, time and place of withdrawal and would allow me to view footage of there ATM without complecating my life , go to manager, go to police, go to matatu... Anyway i later found out it was my Ex girlfriend and I beat her ass to death...[?] So anyone knows a good bank with no monthly charges ... Enough ATM's, Cues not longer than those on a "Kichwa Bila Mwili" at the ASK show ground" and maybe no minimum balance, or even better they can give me a Credit Card without needing me to earn more than 30K. You have to pay for them. I would recommend Standard Chartered anytime, expensive but worth the money. @Wash, I just find them very efficient and the queues are not wrong. And they also have one of the best internet and mobile banking platforms anywhere in Sub-Sahara Africa. They have this account with fixed charges of KES 750 and you can carry all the transactions you want to. Anyway, I have had this account for over 12 years and I have rarely been disappointed. I have moved from bank to bank over the years but I have kept this and it remains my primary one. I also heard horror stories from days banks likes KCB and Barclays where downsizing a few years ago and close people's account and transferred others to God-know-where branches. I also said it is a matter of personal preference. And the horror stories I had heard years back. And the long queues, customer service is not so good. A couple of years ago I was walking in town, I think it was just when Equity has transformed from a building society and a bank. I saw a long queue around Queensways stretching all the way to almost near Hilton and I asked a friend what that queue was for, and I was told it was Equity Bank. Coop Bank damu - I have like 5 accounts there under different alias. And its true Visa, and if you check into those smaller branches e.g the ones in malls,, no queues (except btn 29th and 8th - very annoying) Also and usually, wherever you see a coop bank ATM, the bank is usually around there somewhere..

I am with BOA (Bank of Africa Kenya Ltd), new and small, so no queue at all, good services. They have a Bweb option for 1300 Kshs so that you can view statement/do transaction online. They have just launch a new preload VISA card (Toucan), no account required, no balance. Brian, Does the Hifathi account really make sense? I operate a joint account for biashara which is a Hifadhi account and every month the charges add up to be so high since we are charged for over the counter withdrawals and it ends up being more expensive than my Excel account. I think the Excel account makes so much since since its still the standard 850/- per month, only condition is the salary must be above some figure. @ Ken, I was with barclays Prestige, and the queues were not fun. It wasn't all in one meaning every once in a while some charge would pop up. And the straw that broke the camel's back..they couldn't give me a loan when I needed one. Something that stanchart did and only required that I open an account with them once the loan was approved. In 48 hours none the less.In my opinion, Barclays need to make up their mind if they are competing with Stanchart or Equity. And BTW Stanchart allow you to borrow less than Barclays because they don't want you to overcommit yourself and end up hating your life...and they are planning to introduce an SLA where if say your loan is delayed, they pay you for the inconvenience. In short they care about their customers more than the average bank does. I could go on and on but like I said..... Hi, I think NIC is worth a mention. It's been bliss since i moved about a yr ago. here is the 800Ksh per month charge, just like stanchart, but now the queues are almost non-existent, very quick service. They are very tight on the whole fraud thing, no assumptions. Only problem so far is the number of ATMs and branches which are very few even within the CBD. In short they care about their customers more than the average bank does. I could go on and on but like I said.....

Some experience I had with Barclays - There was a time they deducted about 50k from my account claiming its a loan repayment, and I had no loan at that time since my previous loan was fully paid back about 6 months earlier. They did accept the transaction was done wrongly, but it took me 21 working days to get back the money in my account. I thought this was a one-off, but after some time, I heard about 3 people going the same way, with someone having to wait about 36 days for a reversal of a wrong transaction. Same bad experience with BBK Yaya Prestige. 1/ Fail to understand the high fees for Prestige service vs average services and long queue. 2/ Did an international payment of 20 000 Kshs and BBK turned the 20 000 Kshs into 20 000 euros = overdraft 3/ Doing wrong transaction and when you complain, they are looking at you like you are a monster or is not a big deal = poor customer care I have move since and I am with Bank of Africa Kenya (BOA Kenya), took a loan with them. I have never tried NIC, but after I looked up their shareholding structure and found out that the majority shareholder is Barclays, I kept off.

And the straw that broke the camel's back..they couldn't give me a loan when I needed one. Something that stanchart did and only required that I open an account with them once the loan was approved. In 48 hours none the less.In my opinion, Barclays need to make up their mind if they are competing with Stanchart or Equity. And BTW Stanchart allow you to borrow less than Barclays because they don't want you to overcommit yourself and end up hating your life...and they are planning to introduce an SLA where if say your loan is delayed, they pay you for the inconvenience. In short they care about their customers more than the average bank does. I could go on and on but like I said.....

Most of these small banks are great when it comes to customer service and personalized banking, you can negotiate on anything from chequebook charges, cash withdrawals to be delivered to ur office etc. The problem will now come when you need money(loan).
