Re: [Skunkworks] Telkom: Let the fundraising begin

Funny how things turn out! It's difficult to imagine Safaricom used to be a 'department' at Telkom and now the latter is not even the second but a distant third MNO in terms of subscribers and revenue! If a business venture does not make profits,the most reasonable thing to do is to end its operations and not to pour in more money hoping that the tides will turn! "The country spent more than Sh90 billion of taxpayers’ money to prepare the company for sale to French Telecom in 2007. This resulted in loss of 16,100 jobs in five years. Additionally, the government surrendered its crucial fibre optic network as a Sh10 billion sweetener for what is turning out to be one of the messiest privatisation transactions in recent times." Doesn't doing the above now have complications considering the stringent public procurement guidelines under the new constitution? ./bernard On Wed, Mar 21, 2012 at 9:35 AM, Moses Muya <mouzmuyer@gmail.com> wrote:

This company is suffering from internal sabotage and inefficiencies which are historical like that of KBC. It is only in Telekom / Orange where at this time and age you report an issue like one I had on ISDN failure and it takes more than a month to resolve. This is while very much aware that there are other providers in the market and that one can switch to another one in a twinkle of a second. By the time the service resumed I had already taken another provider. James On 3/21/2012 9:35 AM, Moses Muya wrote:

I think the French have spent so much time focusing on GSM/Mobile lines(which Safcom ran away with ) and left out key areas that would have seen it compete effectively. For instance, fixed line and data. Before Orange came, there were great product lines at TKL Fixed Lines, Kenstream, Jambonet, Kensat,CDMA,even Data hosting. Long before other ISPs started digging all over town, TKL had fiber in CBD and other rolls of cable dumped on Ngong rd. Orange simply got their priorities wrong IMHO. @Bernard, What is not healthy about sleuths sniffing Internet traffic? It's been happening anyway, if you ask me. No country in its true senses can leave their cyber traffic unmonitored, lest they be caught flat-footed! Your fears about heading back to the monopoly are simply unfounded in this era - unless you wanna explain why you feel so. On Thu, Mar 22, 2012 at 11:34, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote:

Did anyone see GADO's depiction of this in today's Daily Nation? Wash,
Your commenting on the wrong post. My sentiments are about the telkom kenya bailout "appeal" and not about cyber sleuthing.

@Bernard,
What is not healthy about sleuths sniffing Internet traffic? It's been happening anyway, if you ask me. No country in its true senses can leave their cyber traffic unmonitored, lest they be caught flat-footed! Your fears about heading back to the monopoly are simply unfounded in this era - unless you wanna explain why you feel so.

Gents,
Jokes aside, the unfolding events are certainly not healthy for the telcom industry.I fear we might be headed back to a monopoly.
I definitely don't stand to gain.
