And talking of freeing our wonderful iPhones from the favorite carrier, what does the new ICT Bill say about it? Are we now all officially criminals but have not been judged because of the impunity in Kenya? Anyway, I am blogging about it on my blog: http://greenheyday.blospot.com. They call the syndrome 'impunity' and that's why we need the International Criminal Tribunal to sort it out for us Kenyans. Starting with the unlockers and the jail-breakers. Some people will soon be sharing a cell in the Hague with Charles Taylor and Ratco Mladic. On Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 5:55 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

Its not against the law when you acquire freedom to choose : and that's why its called "Jailbreaking" Jail is not a good place when people want to reach you.

@Okechukwu I would like to ask a question because we are debating this..... <we have just seen the steve jobs keynote speech on youtube for first iphone 2007 and he talks about having same hardware and upgrading software inorder to change features of device - right ?> My question is:- When you upgrade from iphone from iphone 2.0 [which was gsm] to iphone 3.0 - does it come with 3G capabilities ? Which would then warrant the question - based on the design of the iphone product - is software upgrade suffucient to upgrade the device from 2G to 3G as per Steve Jobs argument? w/r Snn

The iPhone release before then 3G did not have the mobile 3G in them, so a simple software upgrade for 2 to 3.0 will not enable the 3G functionality. I also remember Steve Jobs then saying that the 3G technology available when the iPhone first came out consumed too much power and hence that's why the iPhone did not have 3G then. But the technology improved and the 3G was put in the the iPhone 3G. While there are some features that can be enabled by software upgrade, 3G is more of an hardware issue and hence it can not. @ Okechukwu The safcom guys issue 3G and 2G simcards. I think 3G simcards come with the huawei usb 3G cards [popularly known as bambanet] - Did you use the 3G simcard ? I am curious about the outcome of this debate since i am not present to test it myself.

I think there is not 2G or 3G sim card, any SIM would work on any 3G device including some Nokia Phones and the iPhone 3G. Safaricom's 3G is mainly in Nairobi, Mombasa and I don't know where else so location could also be a factor. On Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 2:47 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

the first generation iphone was EDGE(2.75G), while the second generation iphone was 3G. The just released iphone 3Gs is a 3rd generation iphone. the 1st generation will never access 3G. Safaricom 3G network is availabe in Nairobi, Mombasa and has been reported in parts of Nakuru & Eldoret(possibly still in the testing). The 3G network works on any 3G phone(other factors constant). Does nayone know if Yu have ordered 3G equipment or whether they have st up base outside Nairobi & Mombasa? 2009/6/24 Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com>

@Rahim -its the first generation iPhone - 2G @ndungu - the same SIM shows 3G on an iPhone 3G and a nokia Nseries, so your assertion of a 3G SIM may not be right. ./Ok3ch On 6/24/09, christiano kwena <christianokwena@googlemail.com> wrote:

I think there is not 2G or 3G sim card, any SIM would work on any 3G device including some Nokia Phones and the iPhone 3G. Safaricom's 3G is mainly in Nairobi, Mombasa and I don't know where else so location could also be a factor.

Well i think it depends on operator ... some can update the user's profile to access the 2G or 3G network by simply doing the same on the existing HLR. This depends on the simcards. We have simcards that access both 2G/3G so all they need is a profile update. Others require you to change your simcard if it does not support 3G. == about the yu network and 3G ,, i dont think they are going to be ordering any 3G equipment soon... orange is more likely to second 3G before the other two.

May I add another issue which I need help with. I recently unlocked and jailbroke an iphone 2G. It works perfectly with the available networks. The only issue is that it requests for a username and a password when attempting to download apps from the appstore (even free apps). Anyone with a solution of how to get passed this? You need to have a lid Apple ID, and you can go through the process of registering. You may need to have a valid credit card even if you are not purchasing anything or you are just downloading free applications. It is part of the registration process. Yes, exactly. Kenya is not part of the Countries that you can choose from. Is there a way round this particular problem? Even if it means using another jailbreak other than pwanage. To use MMS, go to Settings, General, Cellular Data Network and enter your carrier's settings under MMS. You will need the APN, username and password and other MMS settings. You can ask your carrier for these details and they will assist you. Same goes for access to 3G or 2G data, just enter the APN, username and password and you will be set. Most of the APNs are not configured with usernames and passwords. All you need is the proxy address [which you can get from any other APN in the same network]. However, some networks dont allow all users to use the data services. So you may need to contact your customer care to provide your simcard with that ability. However, for some, all simcards are enabled and all you need is to get your APN mms settings correct.

Cannot find this on the 3G model. Regrds K Z M ---"It's not your blue blood, your pedigree or your college degree. It's what you do with your life that counts. --- On Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 12:21 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

There is nothing like #G and 2G simcards. All simcards dial particular BSS and teh BSS are teh 2g or 3g. Thats why with a simcard which is 3g when you go to Kisumu its 2G because there is no 3G in Kisumu On Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 2:47 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:
