To use MMS, go to Settings, General, Cellular Data Network and enter your carrier's settings under MMS. You will need the APN, username and password and other MMS settings. You can ask your carrier for these details and they will assist you. Same goes for access to 3G or 2G data, just enter the APN, username and password and you will be set.
I also registered with an SA address picked up from gmaps and works okay
