Well, just tried it with a safcon SIM is its still on Edge, so the software upgrade to 3.0 did not enable 3G, the explanation from Philip could be it - Only improvements on the phone is the copy/paste, landscape everything and MMS.

The iPhone release before then 3G did not have the mobile 3G in them, so a simple software upgrade for 2 to 3.0 will not enable the 3G functionality. I also remember Steve Jobs then saying that the 3G technology available when the iPhone first came out consumed too much power and hence that's why the iPhone did not have 3G then. But the technology improved and the 3G was put in the the iPhone 3G.

While there are some features that can be enabled by software upgrade, 3G is more of an hardware issue and hence it can not.

@Okechukwu

I would like to ask a question because we are debating this.....
<we have just seen the steve jobs keynote speech on youtube for first iphone 2007 and he talks about having same hardware and upgrading software inorder to change features of device - right ?>

My question is:-

When you upgrade from iphone from iphone 2.0 [which was gsm] to iphone 3.0 - does it come with 3G capabilities ?

Which would then warrant the question - based on the design of the iphone product - is software upgrade suffucient to upgrade the device from 2G to 3G as per Steve Jobs argument?
