Re: [Skunkworks] SAS for Data Analytics

Actually I think the training for R was done by one Mr. Mimano of datadyne. They also do data collection apps for agric NGOs. He's on this list On Sep 16, 2015 8:46 AM, "Eva Kimathi" <evakimathi@gmail.com> wrote:

Alternatives; you can consider IBM SPSS or Stata. R is also an option if the users can roll up their sleeves and get coding.

Hello All,
My employer has a research department and they asked me for assistance in procuring SAS 9.4 . I am not conversant with it and went online to look it up.
From SAS website, it seems like it is at least a three tier system (server to end user). My queries:
- Is there anyone out there that has interacted with SAS? - Does it scale down or should I also include a server along with their request? - Are there alternatives that are not as large scale as SAS?
I look forward to your response :)

SAS's license is damn expensive and thus you will find only big companies, the likes of Safaricom and banks can afford it. For companies that us it locally, I only know of Safaricom and some International Research companies like CDC,ILRI But if you get someone to train them on R, it can save the situation. There is also simplified R enterprise by Revolution Analytics (Acquired by Microsoft), you can check that too. Eva - long time. My advice, before you spend any mullah on an analytics solution please take lots of time in planning/strategizing/gathering facts (like what you are doing here). I know of a good number of organizations sitting with expensive solutions doing Excel level analytics. Having said that and from what you have shared, i would get R, spend some mullah on training my people (by the way R is not that hard), and narrow down on specifics. Rem even SAS is not like word (plug and play) and you will still need to train. Also i train guyz on R :) On Thu, Sep 17, 2015 at 9:08 AM, Eva Kimathi via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Hello All,
My employer has a research department and they asked me for assistance in procuring SAS 9.4 .
