Actually I think the training for R was done by one Mr. Mimano of datadyne. They also do data collection apps for agric NGOs. He's on this list

From SAS website, it seems like it is at least a three tier system (server  to end user). My queries: 

• Is there anyone out there that has interacted with SAS? 
• Does it scale down or should I also include a server along with their request?
  
• Are there alternatives that are not as large scale as SAS?
