Dear All, Does anyone in the room know how to unlock this Safaricom modem to work with other providers?I have tried using YU,Orange,Zein but it keeps requesting for the unlock code. I have tried using DC-Unlocker to unlock the data card but this isn't detecting the card. Is there an alternative Software that I can use to unlock this modem? Please if anyone knows the location, send me the link. Regards, Boniface Maina.

Chege, you do realise that what you are proposing to do is illegal and CCK can make you pay KShs. 1 million in fine or 3 years in jail (or is it 5?) or both? That said, if you could search the skunk archives, you probably might get some good infor :-) On Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 10:07 AM, chege boniface <chegebonie@gmail.com>wrote:

Dear Boniface, I think you have a very strong point that MUST be offered to the on-going draft ICT regulations which I'm told are on going. Your experience is within the consumer protection laws and I think imperative that Telcos use open standards hardware to avoid such issues befalling consumers. I think Alex may help. Let's also be look at it from the telco's point of view. The modems offered by Safaricom/Zain/Yu offer are subsidized by the aforementioned. Is it fair for me to subsidize something for you to use it with my competition? On Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 10:58 AM, chege boniface <chegebonie@gmail.com>wrote:

Hello Rad, All, If it was a managed service (a service where you lease the modem from the provider) .. yes it would be unfair to the provider because technically the modem belongs to them. But in this case you *bought the modem* and how you use it or with whom should not really be their concern. A service consumer should be protected from incurring capital expenditure that is tied to proprietary technology used by the service provider. This can be done in wither two ways, One is to LEASE the proprietary equipment as part of the service. Second it to advise the consumer to purchase the open / standard equipment from either the provider or an independent manufacturer. How would you feel of KPLC decided to sell proprietary bulbs, TVs computers etc together with their elec such that of you bought your own and plugged them to the mains .. they wouldn't come on ... 2009/10/12 Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com>

If unlocking the modem/phone amounts to flashing its serial number(IMEI) then yes, this is illegal.... ./bernard On Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 11:08 AM, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

These subsidy costs are recovered in about 3 months of the smallest data package sold. Its like the discounted hand-sets they sell with pre-paid lines. Locking the modem forever is plain idiocy since cost recovery isnt happening for the life of the modem. The providers are behaving like crack-cocaine dealers when they insist on such lock-ins.

Someone on this list once discovered a 'bug'that involves going to the official huawei site and downloading the latest firmware for your modem. Upgrading your modem to this firmware causes your modem to work with other telcos sim cards. If this occurs to you, please contact saf customer care and explain to them that upgrading your modem with official software causes it to perform inappropriately. I think they should try as hard as possible. Best of luck. On 12/10/2009, chege boniface <chegebonie@gmail.com> wrote:

I dont know how gys can argue that its illegal while the law itself is contentious. It talks about re-programming while in the real sense even adding wallpapers and ringtones is re-programming. Where does one get a licence to be a "bonafide" re-programmer? Bad laws must be disobeyed guys. On Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 1:37 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

I dont know how gys can argue that its illegal while the law itself is contentious. It talks about re-programming while in the real sense even adding wallpapers and ringtones is re-programming. Where does one get a licence to be a "bonafide" re-programmer?
@Theus - wacha zako, adding wallpapers and ringtones is not reprogramming. I don't understand why people are complaining. When you bought the modem you knew the terms and conditions and YOU signed the contract.

Instead of arguing what is legal and what is not, can't one of us, come up with a modem which has a number of sim cards 'ports and automatically allows one to use whatever sim card, just like those twin sim phones? I think innovation is not limited, or is it? Otherwise. the equipment is yours as long you claim ownership. How many of us, for instance, use our custom made screensavers on our comps? Does it constitute to crime? On 12/10/2009, Billy <billyx5@gmail.com> wrote:

I am sure the Chinese could have such a device. But they always get the software wrong.

@Chege,I bought my modem at 10K before they started subsidizing them if that is what they are doing now that they are costing 3K. I therefore own mine outright and I am having the same kind of issues you are having. Immediately you get an answer to this, please let me have it so they can sue us together - I really can't wait for that day - we are all going to be free again. Freedom at last it will be! Unlocking a phone or modem is *not* illegal - changing the IMEI *is* illegal - although, you may be breaking a contract with the telco if you unlock a device locked to their network - for which you may face a civil action. Check what you signed when buying the modem. Tony 2009/10/12 chege boniface <chegebonie@gmail.com>:

I dont think it make sense for one to own 5 dongles or modems!!,..why is it illegal? Once I bought the modem I owned it completely and I also dont think I can be questioned for modifying my Property.Does it hurt any one really??,..guys,..lets be innovative.

Hi Tony, I'm sharing a thought on this. I think if there is any contacts signed then it would be illegal to crack but there should be a *caveat emptor ( buyer beware )* in the said contract clauses. And when Telcos do not perform on service delivery which is also part and parcel of the platform contract, they would easily be in breach of it. Most of these Telcos and SPs are lucky that consumers do not take any civil action against them as time is very restrictive... Some reasons for one to hack into a modem and create it for open access is : 1) They are unhappy with the provider and are now being forced to spend more money to choose an alternative provider. 2) Their provider may not have coverage in areas which the Telco did not mention to them at time of purchase. Universal open access modems. Can you imagine the old analogue days if modems were locked to specific vendors? And open access hardware popularity drove prices even further downwards. -- "making it happen...." www.projectskenya.info

Exactly .. unlocking is not illegal... they are simply gonna terminate your contract (if they care ... AFAIK safaricom customer care is brain-dead enough not to care).
