Balance Brought Forward? Never! - Mobile Data Services

Hello Skunks, On Safaricom 3G (or any other data service for that matter) if you do not exhaust the bundle in 30 days, and if you do not reload (buy more bundle) before the expiry of the 30 days then you lose all portion of bundle that you never got to use. I've been buying 1GB bundles (KES 2,499) and sometimes by the end of the calendar month, I still have like 300MB remaining which then just disappears into Safaricom's coffers. 1GB at 2500 means KES 2.5/MB. Losing 300MB means I forfeit KES 750 to safaricom and my line is still active! Why is it so difficult for Safaricom to let customers use all the bundle they buy by bringing the balance forward??? In the same breath, if you purchased N amount of data bundle from Safaricom while you have KES X.00 as available credit on your line, upon depletion of the N bundle, Safaricom will allow you to continue to use their data services while charging you at KES 8.00/MB on your available KES X.00 credit. This is my experience, using a prepaid line. Is it just me who finds this immoral? Does YU and Orange behave the same way? Alex (Gakuru), I need protection from safaricom :-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Alex should lobby the CCK to criminalize this immoral behavior from Safaricom. I know many people have been suffering silently because of this bundle loss. It does just make economic sense. 2009/7/8 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

I have never actually monitored usage... but I remember a safcom support person telling me that the unused data balance is brought forward, once you buy a new package for the next month... isnt that the case ?

No! Once you buy a new package for the next month before the expiry of the previous month's bundle! If your bundle expires today (with NN MB still remaining) and you buy a package tomorrow, you only have the new package. Well, sorry about that. It is a peculiar kenyan habit where instituitions and companies come up with products and procedures which are quite complex, but whose effect on the institution is unknown so the clever insituition/company decides to make it a failsafe procedure on their part, and the customer becomes a guinea pig. If the procedure doesn't work out as anticipated, the customer will loose and we will smile all the way to the bank. doesn't the consumer need us? since the consumer really needs us, and would suffer if we weren't there, there is no need to test products before rolling them out while we can roll them out and test them at the same time. In case of any changes(negative to the consumer) make sure as few of them as possible know of such changes. Long live the company/instituition. (You can ask Zain, they know how to implement the above and how to make sure their employees are disgruntled too( On 10/07/2009, Judy Okite <judyokite@gmail.com> wrote:

If the procedure doesn't work out as anticipated, the customer will loose and we will smile all the way to the bank. doesn't the consumer need us?
since the consumer really needs us, and would suffer if we weren't there, there is no need to test products before rolling them out while we can roll them out and test them at the same time.
In case of any changes(negative to the consumer) make sure as few of them as possible know of such changes.

scenario two;
I went to buy the 2k bundle and was told that they do not have it anymore...since I had already bought the Ksh2000 credit and loaded,I was only able to purchase 250MB data that costs Kshs.850. now, they have played around with their system that now it does not show the amount of bundle you have left......apparently when my 250bundle was done, they converted the 1150 credit that ws remaining into bundles and started charging me 7bob per MB...could someone kindly educate me here.....coz I could be wrong to call this thieving.

Hello Skunks,
On Safaricom 3G (or any other data service for that matter) if you do not exhaust the bundle in 30 days, and if you do not reload (buy more bundle) before the expiry of the 30 days then you lose all portion of bundle that you never got to use.

That is true -- I bought a Ksh. 2500 bundle - and they promised me or assured me 90 days... However, on the Orange side - I am told that apparently, I purchased 15k worth of data bundle [for 3 months] for the iPhone without my knowledge... I have really really tried to exhaust this bundle lakini its not kwishing -- I fear for the coming month of september ...
On the first month - I was given Ksh 5000 - at the end of July, I had only managed to use Ksh. 400 despite all my attempts to use GPRS/3G + ? at any waking hour of the day Come August, my account was injected with another Ksh. 5000 And in September [last month before next purchase] - they shall inject another Ksh. 5000
Now the problem is, the iPhone cannot download files [only from emails and the cache from youtube - which is still painfully slow despite the fibre rumor] The iPhone does not allow "tethering" to the computer while still unlocked -- and if you unlock -- you cud lose the 15k bundle... I need to know how to connect the damn device to a laptop so that I can exhaust the bundle in the last month of September...

Stephen If you can jailbreak and unlock your iPhone, then you can use a third party application called iPhoneModem to make your iPhone act as a modem. A bit slow but it works. You will not loose your bundle. While sti locked, there is no way to use it as a modem short of removing the SIM card and using it in a modem. Odhiambo That is very immoral and its something which we have told MJ many times. Why dont they just suspend your line for the month and activate it and you have the remaining data when you renew? Safaricom is stealing for many guys on this and I think that we need protection on this. Another issue which I also want CCk to address is that the Mobile phone companies should hamonise their codes. Their is no reason why subscribers should be confused with one network having 123, another 144 another 122, another 153 its hectic to manage all these codes. Even DRC, Rwanda and Tanzania have forced their phone companies to make the work of the subscribers easier by harmonising the codes. We are waiting action from CCK MO 2009/7/8 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

The only way to avoid loosing the bundle is to topup some more befor the current one expires. Also CCK needs to introduce number portability where your current number becomes like your ID number. You move between networks and maintain your number that way this you can choose the network thats gives you value for your money and your callers still get you on the same number. Let us interrogate and reflect this 'expiry' argument just a little... Suppose Safaricom crew has for a long period of time been negotiating for 1.2 billion Rand cash injection way down in the South. They are lucky to get it and close the deal with the likes of Barclays Capital, Absa Bank and CFC Stanbic. All happy decide to spend a week, or two, touring the great land of our brothers. Then they board a KQ plane and safely land at JKIA. They are asked by customs officials to pay for some imported items, or excess luggage - not a problem since they got shillings 11B. But alas, the customs official looks at them amusedly saying, "wacheni mchezo, angalieni expiry date on those notes." Like in Zim, unfortunately, their dole just expired jana... Yet they still have to repay the loan they just got. Would they be justified to complain about currency expiry dates? If not, why should they expect us to accept 'expiry' of Kenya money, paid to them in advance, loaded as airtime, or 'bundles' or whatever.
