Someone I know is considering buying an iPad, and the difference in price between the iPad WiFi only vs WiFi plus 4G is $130. Can anyone confirm that they're getting "4G speeds" in the Nairobi area, or at least "3G speeds"? Does it matter which country the iPad is purchased? Thanks. Erick

@Ok3ch, If you round up 3.75G to the nearest something, you get 4G. Never mind the issue with frequencies :-) On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 07:31, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

@Ok3ch, You did hear the other day that QB was testing 42Mbps speeds, right? What I am wondering now is what speeds do people get on 4G? What is the highest threshold for 3G, knowing that the frequencies for running 4G are still being pocketed, much as QB is shouting itself hoarse for them?? Can someone get 100Mbps downloads on 3G as long as they have the equipment? Let me ask Google... or Mwagiru :-) On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 07:55, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

QB and other opcos where WCDMA is prevalent are shouting themselves hoarse for the same reason. LTE promises(as with every technology) to utilise the scant resource optimally and efficiently. After a certain point radio optimisation reaches its snap point: You cant continue splitting cells infinitely. Most of the problems listed in another thread is a result. Opcos are putting pressure on the regulator to expedite the migration of analogue to digital migration. The freed-up resources(the 700MHz band TV stations are currently using) will then offer a breather for both some 3G but mostly for 4G. Actually, the main motivation for LTE is primarily voice.Techies want to off-load voice traffic to data traffic as SIP/VoIP,etc. Marketers use LTE data through-puts as an incentive to its early adoption(Like Sprint---> http://goo.gl/zyDuA).Either way, it'll offer relief for radio optimisation techies, hopefully.
Can someone get 100Mbps downloads on 3G as long as they have the equipment? On 4G yes. What is the highest threshold for 3G, The techies who tested HSPA+ at safcom's "launch" attained 38Mbps out of the theoretical 84Mbps. Perhaps there's something on the works to push to further.

@Erick, with the WiFi only iPad, it means you only get access to the internet when you are in an area with WiFi. With the WiFi+3/4G, you can put in a sim card from your fav operator, buy your bundles and enjoy internet while on that long trip to shaggs. Oh yeah, you can still get internet on the go on the WiFi only by using some "dongles" which create a sorta WiFi network around you, there is one from Safaricom which costs 12k. I am not sure of differences in software/settings due to country of purchase, but I can assure you that a particular model will be more expensive if bought from UK as opposed to US, and even more expensive if bought from KE. If $130 wouldn't make a dent, despite lack of 4G in Kenya, I'd still advise you to be 4G-ready. If we ever get 4G, don't worry, your 4G-ready iPad would be among the first to pick the signals. Doesn't matter which country the iPad is purchased from/in. 4G device is backward compatible to receive 3G signals. Get a Safcom, Airtel and Orange SIM card and decide based on the following in order of priority: - Ease of purchasing data bundles - Coverage (number of bars) - Reliability/Consistency of service - Better throughputs ./bernard On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 2:07 PM, Erick Njoka <erickarn@gmail.com> wrote:

Yes, the 4G works well with 3G signals. In addition to an LTE chipset than only work in the US currently, it has a HSPD+ chip that does 3G network. About the best 3G prvovider, there isn't exactly one 'best' 3G provider. You will have to blance cost , reliability, coverage and availability of Micro-SIMs as you shop for you provider. Safaricom, Orange and Airtel all have 3G in Nairobi and other major cities. In my experiences, Safaricom 3G is very fast on the new iPad, noticeably faster than iPad 2. but it is also costly. Never tried Orange or Airtel. Even if we had 4G in Kenya, it wil probably work on the current model iPad because of the difference in frequencies used in USA and what we would use in KE. But future chips may just be dual or quad-band and would work in most countries just like the current generation 3G chips. You must understand 4G is very new, the chip is large and consumes a lot of power. But by end of this year, this will have reduced in size and power consumption to address multiple frequency bands. But we may still to have commercial 4G then in Kenya.

Thanks, Bernard. Philip, did you mean "Even if we had 4G in Kenya, it wil probably *not* work on the current model iPad because of the difference in frequencies"? Erick On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 6:14 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

I meant it will probably not work. It will only work if the 4G we had in Kenya is either 700 MHz or 2100 MHz, that what the current iPad supports. Ib definitely know it is not 700 MHz seeing that is being used by analogue television, but maybe it is 2100 MHz. @ Bernard Mwangiru can clarify. But as it stands, we don;t even know what frequency a commercial implementation of 4G will use. I have heard 2600 MHz, other in the industry are championing for 700 MHz currently at the hands of well connect TV barrons. The 700 MHz offer much larger coverage, so fewer base stations and should be easier to implement. Higher frequencies cover much less area, and require more BTSs. But as I said, future 4G chips will be quad-band and would work almost everywhere.

Thanks, guys, I'll pass on the information to wadosi. Erick On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 6:48 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:
