Hello John, I have been trying to register the whole of last week. The portal has been very slow so I called KNEC ony to be told that alot of schools are trying to register and that I keep trying maybe luck might be on my side. I wonder how many schools will be locked out On Mon, Mar 23, 2015 at 11:17 AM, Njiri John via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I wonder if any of these e-government projects ever bother to perform load tests on their sites, or even design with surge activity in mind. Surely they can at least spread out the load over other cloud providers during registration only, then suspend them until next year. Azure (and I assume amazon) both offer surge pricing for a short while that's cheaper than getting powerful servers for a whole year. Regards, John K. Hi John One year ago,i was doing registration for a school and it was extremely frustrating.I raised the issue with KNEC and was told to keep trying because every other school was trying to beat the deadline. Try i did with no much success.I changed tact, woke up at those ungodly hours and it worked like a charm. Its so sad if the problem still persists. Try the graveyard shift.Good luck! -- Regards Steve Wainaina

Steve's idea is the best, try either late at night or early morning. It's sad that this is still an issue, when there are many solutions out there to help sites deal with seasonal activity. Regards, John K. On 23 March 2015 at 12:43, steve wainaina via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

More often than not, the root cause of such embarrassing bottlenecks lies in the tendering/procurement mischief. Probably whoever bagged the job did not have solid technical competence to deploy an elegant solution. Hard luck to you if you were to offer the concerned institutions a fix - even on pro bono terms! Tony.

Has anyone of you made a single step, even after probably waking up in the wee hours of the night? On Mon, Mar 23, 2015 at 3:17 PM, Tony Likhanga via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I was wondering exactly the same thing - maybe not "all" site need you to do full load-tests etc, but if you have a site that you KNOW will be subject to intense peek loads then you really should do that testing so you know your limits, then knowing the limits/capacity will allow you to deploy something like https://queue-it.com alternatively you build it so that it can scale easily (i.e. on Google app engine or similar). *rant on* Whats really annoying is that all the institutions (customers) and suppliers in Kenya (sorry for generalizing) seem to be hell bent on doing all the same rookie mistakes that the rest of the wold have already solved. The same kind of "ups we can't handle the peek load" issues used to be common in Europe too, but have mostly vanished these days - IF Kenya as a nation wants to move to the forefront of IT in the region then we REALLY need to learn from the mistakes of others and avoid having to go through the same amount of development-years.... *rant-off* ..
