Business Daily Article declares that government websites are hacked because they use open-source software

I could not believe my eyes after I saw the article of page 5 of the business daily! Moses.

That's ignorance by the writer. The guardian uses Joomla, Mashable is Wordpress, Techweez too. Heck, even the PM's site is Joomla. Safaricom store is Joomla. Them being open source does not make them vulnerable. Updates and site security does. Here's where I place a disclaimer: I have not read the article, am responding to this entry as-is. So I may not properly know the exact writer's words. On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 8:33 AM, Moses <mosenetk@gmail.com> wrote:

The Press misquoted the guy. What he meant was that majority of the websites in Kenya are based on open source hence there is a lot of knowledgeable people on the same Open source (LAMP) technologies i.e. both developers and hackers. He also said that those technologies need to be kept updated (security patching) therefore if they are not patched then they are easily hacked into. In so many words, that was his message but as usual the Press "mutulad" his message. On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 8:57 AM, Martin Gicheru <martin@techweez.com> wrote:

We've had this discussion here before, on the need to have technical writers. On 25 July 2012 09:15, Eric Mugo <kabugum@gmail.com> wrote:

In a market where the traditional proprietary vendors are fighting hard for preferred status in government contracts and private business, I still find it hard believe that 'mis-quoted' bit! On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 10:28 AM, David Njuki <njukey@gmail.com> wrote:

Reminds me of a journalist who I strongly feel was paid by Banks to trash MPESA. When she contacted me (as a dealer - not developer); I told her the whole idea behind "Float" and the ID authentication process to deposit/withdraw. Suffice to say when I read the article, I was grossly misquoted - she made MPESA look fishy, unsecure and unprofessional. So this article is not surprising. I wish for the day layman readers will read non-biased and objective headlines/articles on such matters.

http://www.dwheeler.com/secure-programs/Secure-Programs-HOWTO/open-source-se... In short, the effect on security of open source software is still a major debate in the security community, though a large number of prominent experts believe that it has great potential to be more secure.
