Orange 3G+ : Almost 3000 Mbytes disappears from my data account

Am sharing this, incase you are also affected by this mysterious disease. :- ( Right until saturday, my account had almost 3000 Mbytes available as I usually top up an about 4-6GB per month. I travelled and got back today morning only to log on and be forwarded to the top-up portal that my account contains ZERO Mbytes. Now, no one has access to my modem or account information. I looked at the portal for details and the data log-on shows data usage at odd hours of the night, yet no one could have used it as the only other who can have used it was travelling with me on the trip. I called them today and they will investigate the matter and let me . Hahaha...! It's like a nightmare coming back. I recall many years ago the scams TKL staff used to run on International Calls. You would get billed for these calls yet you would have to prove to them that you never made such calls. Who the heck did I know in eastern europe, middle east etc? Then every month your line would be disconnected and you would send a protest letter and they would reinstate the service. This got resolved after almost 2 years of going back and forth with regional managers and the rest though never read of any arrests made but assume the offenses were covered up with the was it the 2001 or 2002 corruption forgiveness act? I cannot believe that such things are coming back. So now I'll have to prove that I did not use the data services because obviously the system shows the data moving? You know what Orange/TKL, you can stuff the mbytes up yours! Right now I could be least bothered about resolving such petty issues. So far Orange has delivered on services, it would be a disaster if their behaviour would be pushing us to move to other telcos. A patient but disappointed/irate Orange fan. Lets see if they resolve it during this week. Purely my personal views.

I also noticed the same - but unfortunately the Customer Care 'chicks' or 'guys' may not have the true answer... It goes like this - after 30 days, you lose what you have, unless you purchase another bundle.. What I do, i have come up with the best optimum bundle rate -- Ksh. 2200 for Ksh. 1.1 per MB. I can buy upto Ksh. 6000 worth of airtime and load them at the self service bundle website - *BUT* - I will not purchase bundles !!! Once my 30 days expires, it will go back to 0 -- so I look at the balance of MB left at the end of the month.. 1) If its too little MB left, I purchase another Ksh. 2200 bundle from my Ksh. 6000 deposit 2) if there is a lot MB left, I just purchase for Ksh. 200 to refresh my old bundle. I hope this is the problem you are facing.. w/r

Though, there is something that weighs heavily in my heart... If I renew my Ksh. 1.1 per MB data bundle - with a Ksh. 5 per MB data bundle... Will my data bundles be charged at old rate Ksh. 1.1 per MB ama the new expensive rate will apply ? Or is the system intelligent enough to separate the two --- but how ???

Dude Stephen , asante. :-) I've been using Orange 3g+ services since launch and fully understand their system so I always ensure that the account data bundles are in credit. I never let the data bundles reach the expiry date and all these months of using the services, have had no issues with the bundles or topups. In my view, something serious has happened with their billing system between saturday and today morning and thus the 3000 Mbytes of data have disappeared. But who am I to say anything, I let them be with their amatuer approach to maintainence on running telcos billing system. I had no internet access this morning for an urgent mail and had to use Zain temporarily. To me Orange/TKL have broken the trust and I also wrote to MJ on kicatnet list that the market needs brand loyalty not just price issues. So far Orange/TKl had me convinced they were the teclo to be with. Now things may change. On Mon, May 17, 2010 at 3:30 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello @Rita, thank you very much for your interest in the issue. I have your mail address and could have easily mailed you on the issue but I decided to follow protocol that thousands of kenyas are exposed to each time they have problems. I called customer service this morning and they will revert to me on their findings. Asante sana. :-) Rgds. On Mon, May 17, 2010 at 4:12 PM, Rita Gitobu <rgitobu@gmail.com> wrote:

@ Aki There is this question: If I renew my Ksh. 1.1 per MB data bundle - with a Ksh. 5 per MB data bundle... Will my data bundles be charged at old rate Ksh. 1.1 per MB ama the new expensive rate will apply ? Or is the system intelligent enough to separate the two tariffs --- ???

@Stephen, I think the logic is this : X number of mbytes = 1.1Ksh/Mb Y number of mbytes = 5Ksh/Mbyte total number of mbytes Z = X + Y ; HTHs. :-) On Tue, May 18, 2010 at 1:06 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

@Rita, appreciate the feedback and while my issue is being attended to by the CS team, am requesting one important implementation that I feel Orange/TKL should consider. The 10GB package on 3G+ seems the most the most attractive but given your network speeds in comparison to others on the 3g platform, it will not be possible to consume the data volume on a monthly basis. It's high time that differentiated services were introduced so as to allow consumption of such volumes. As an example, urban areas are bandwidth hogs and deserve more access to bigger bandwidth than those in rural areas simply because of technology density. Telcos implementing the same rates across the country is just something that cannot work long term because whether you choose a 1GB or 10GB package, the only difference is the cost per mbyte, not faster speeds. My view. Asante. :-) On Tue, May 18, 2010 at 12:00 PM, Rita Gitobu <rgitobu@gmail.com> wrote:

@Alvin, Orange 3g+ speeds are definately faster than Zain's edge services but not as fast as those of Safaricom's 3g. Orange has done well to create a balance between costs/speeds and reliability. They have maintained at least 95% reliability since last year. This for me was the main reason I stuck with Orange 3g+ and their Customer Service Dept also works well including a very helpful supervisor, you just need a bit of patience.... http://www.orange.co.ke/internet/internet-everywhere3gplus.php for rates etc. HTHs. Actually, I think there is sth cheeky with Orange. I loaded 850 bob on my edge modem, I used it for two days and the credit was gone. I didn't even bother to ask or call anyone, I just threw away the SIM card into the dustbin. On Thu, May 20, 2010 at 8:44 AM, Alvin Jason Ochieng <ajochola@gmail.com>wrote:

@Mike, let us avoid being harsh with someone who really wanted to help out. :-) @Rita is one of those rare people but we have to understand she is not everything in Orange/TKL and thus our frustrations should be on the bigger picture. This is one reason why I did not directly mail to her on the issue but followed their standard protocol. Am very confident that Orange/TKl will resolve my issue as they are the only Telco to have a sensible billing system in place. And because of the billing system access and facility, I was able to identify the problem at a very early stage. There are 3 things I can purely speculate as being the problem : 1) Poor maintainence of the billing system. They may not have a data integrity system in place or poor implementation by those whose responsibility it is to maintain such a system. People who work in this layer at this telco do not deserve to be given such responsibilties, they are probably better at Customer Service or other tasks that do not carry the Mission Critical Status. 2) Because they sometimes use a certain subnets shared amongst other clients, someone may have compromised their system and now has access to usernames/passwords. 3) Identity/account theft which is usually an insider job. I'm going with option ONE so far and am confident that they will resolve the issue and restore the confidence. Will update on progress. Asante.

Oh my goodness, the same thing happened to me. I had like 4GB and then two weeks ago there was some downtime and I assumed perhaps my bandwidth had expired. I usually just add Ksh. 150 so that I do not lose the remaining bandwidth, but this time I checked and saw that I had only 650MB after loading the extra bundle. I usually do a lot of downloading, but I have never spend more than 700MB per month. Therefore, I wondered where the over 3GB went! I think the bandwidth thieves are targeting heavy users with at least 2GB bundles in their accounts...this way the heavy user gets confused as they ask themselves...did I use all that bandwidth????? Perhaps I did...or perhaps I did not....did I??? I did!! No I did not!!! Perhaps I did... I am now watching my bandwidth very very very very closely. Claire. Right until saturday, my account had almost 3000 Mbytes available as I usually top up an about 4-6GB per month.

@Solomon, you are a nice guy, just tossing a sim card into the dustbin. Last year I sent my greens 3g modem through a shredder, it damaged the blades, was a funny site though... :-))) @Claire, I was patient with Orange because they acknowledged it as a system error. Understanding that the billing system is probably being handled by or outsourced people who are applying the famous formula 1 + 1 = 3 , where 2 is the answer while 3 is more problems created, I can only be patient. That is why I'm concerned that any billing, management or public innovative systems that kenyans use as public services be subjected to quality control standards. This applies to the banks too. Me thots. Catchup soon. Asante. :-) On Thu, May 20, 2010 at 12:14 PM, solomon kariri <solomonkariri@gmail.com> wrote:

I am sticking to Orange like glue... Set up a Cyber cafe in the rural areas using that small USB modem <it was the only option [?]>... And never received a single complaint in terms of speed or reliability <except when credit kwishas> On the other hand, I tested the Safcom USB 3G modem; the network bar rotated every 3 seconds from 0 to full - no freakin way was I going to depend on that. Guess its a case of having a highway with 100 cars in Waiyaki way <safcom>... and having 1 car in the same highway <orange> - who moves faster and easily ???
