Hi All, Am having an issue that has perplexed me so much am now doubting my entire IP knowledge. I have to also say that I have done this setup a numerous amount of times before. I have a server for monitoring (cacti) and slots well with a public IP address A.A.A.A working fine and monitoring all devices perfectly. I have a separate management VLAN on a different switch with all private IP's 192.168.10.0/24. Now, what baffling me is that immediately I assigned the second network interface of the server to this private IP VLAN, my server loses all incoming connections to its public IP A.A.A.A although the server itself can go out and access all other services (Internet, SNMP) perfectly. Maybe its something am missing, but this has stuck with me since Thursday last week! Anyone with any pointers? ./Ok3ch

Is something changing the routes when you assign this interface the private IP? Perhaps you should start by comparing the routes (netstat -rn) before and after the assignment of the private IP and see what paths are taken using traceroute. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 "I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler."

Shit! NetworkManager is on! Let me uninstall that monster. The private IP has not gateway assigned, so routes are not affected at all - I have checked & double checked this. ./Ok3ch On Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 9:33 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

@Tony - the service is the IP service :-) Simple pings & telnet don't work anymore @Wash - from my experience, it decides how it thinks IP services need to behave on a box, for complete control, I always use the networking scripts at /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ to get the actual control I need. Network manager to me works best on a desktop environment with lots of different dynamic connections I've removed NM & am now even in a worse state :-( Cant now reach the interface even when the private is removed - Let me troubleshoot this one first. ./Ok3ch On Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 9:52 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

You could check: - the routing table (netstat -nr) - the interfaces and ports on which your services are listening (netstat -panet) - the traceroutes.... - and the firewall rules (iptables). This will give you an idea of the state of IP on your machine. Kind regards, Bernard On Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 12:18 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

Is something changing the routes when you assign this interface the private IP?
Perhaps you should start by comparing the routes (netstat -rn) before and after the assignment of the private IP and see what paths are taken using traceroute.

Hi Okech, I was hoping for some traceroutes but none so far:-) In any case, my hypothesis is still on the return path. The server is routing traffic meant for the public IP address via the Private VLAN interface instead of the other interface. Why is the question. How many default gateways do you have on the server? Have you specified any static routes on the server? On Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 2:32 PM, John Gitau <jgitau@gmail.com> wrote:

Is something changing the routes when you assign this interface the private IP?
Perhaps you should start by comparing the routes (netstat -rn) before and after the assignment of the private IP and see what paths are taken using traceroute.

I am sure you must have checked this but it does no harm asking. Is the private IP on a separate NIC or a sub-interface? Try removing the hardware address on the ip configs. Also if you check your /etc/sysconfig/network. Have you specified a gateway interface? Regards, Boniface On Wed, Aug 14, 2013 at 12:01 PM, TheMburu George <themburu@gmail.com>wrote:

In any case, my hypothesis is still on the return path. The server is routing traffic meant for the public IP address via the Private VLAN interface instead of the other interface. Why is the question.
How many default gateways do you have on the server? Have you specified any static routes on the server?

In any case, my hypothesis is still on the return path. The server is routing traffic meant for the public IP address via the Private VLAN interface instead of the other interface. Why is the question.
How many default gateways do you have on the server? Have you specified any static routes on the server?

Coming in a little late here, but what about: /etc/hosts /etc/hostname.interfaceX (as per ifconfig -a) Do they match ? Sent from my iPhone On Aug 12, 2013, at 11:24 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi All,
Am having an issue that has perplexed me so much am now doubting my entire IP knowledge.

@Ndungu, Does assigning an IP to an interface in Linux also change /etc/hosts? I find that weird, but not entirely. Maybe something in Linux 'does that for you' automagically. Anyway, even it does, that should not make services that work based on an IP (which has not been modified) to stop working, right? Coming in a little late here, but what about:
/etc/hosts /etc/hostname.interfaceX (as per ifconfig -a)
Do they match ?

Hi All,
Am having an issue that has perplexed me so much am now doubting my entire IP knowledge.
