Hi Skunks, I work with a service/link provider. Most of the customers use two links terminated to our NOC provided by two providers. Mostly Fibre and serial. By default, we usually use fibre as default. We usually manual change the route if the main link has issue`s to the backup link i.e serial. All our customers are on cisco 1721 or 1841 series router. Am looking for a solution where it will be automatic. please assist. Edwin Ngige 0722 841853

@ Thuo, I'd love to be educated on two things here: How NAT would affect Administrative distance or vice versa and how you'd implement IP SLA without two routes with different AD. Sounds like the kind of thing you'd find on a CCIE lab exam if at all its possible. On Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 10:41 AM, Thuo Wilson <lixton@gmail.com> wrote:

Hehe, education you pay - you have my email then. And oops looks my short sentence created confusion - pole. *NAT does not affect adm distance whatsoever* and NEVER will. i intended to direct my urgument to mean the autofailover bit over when doing NAT on same router. Nat will have to switch btwn int 1 and int 2 or vlan x to vlan y - thts what i meant. The IP SLA will work together with adm distance but not DISTANCE Alone - may be my routers are old and don't understand this. I have done this many times - so i know it works on same router. Sorry if i wasn't clear. For more ask me for mpesa...number... WIlson. On 16 September 2011 12:28, John Doe <fivepings@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Hugo Lombard,

Let's say CustomerA terminates on the NOC router on FastEthernet2 and Serial2, and has been assigned the subnet 10.20.0.0/16. On CustomerA's router, the fiber terminates on FastEthernet0, and the serial on Serial0. There's a default route to the NOC. Then, at the NOC router, you might try: ip route 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0 FastEthernet2 ip route 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0 Serial2 100 On the customer router: ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 FastEthernet0 ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Serial0 100 Note that this assumes the NOC router and CustomerA's router senses a DOWN on their respective FastEthernet interfaces in case of issues on the fiber. Once that happens, it will fall back to the route over the Serial interfaces, until the FastEthernet comes up again. Beware, this advice is based on a lot of assumptions. You should make sure you understand the consequences of applying this to your network, if you choose to do so. -- Hugo Lombard

This will work if the interface goes down. On fiber connection, most of the time connectivity to the switch will be up but there could be failure/cut after the switch. The best way is check availability of the noc router through the primary link (you can use icmp ping tracking) and failover to secondary link if availability is not there. -----Original Message----- From: skunkworks-bounces@lists.my.co.ke [mailto:skunkworks-bounces@lists.my.co.ke] On Behalf Of Hugo Lombaard Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2011 12:32 PM To: Skunkworks Mailing List Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Auto Switching of Links and Aggregation On Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 12:20:50PM +0300, Edwin Ngige wrote:
Hi Hugo Lombard,
All links terminate on one router at end user side and the same at NOC side.
Hi Hugo Lombard, At client side, both links terminate on one router mostly cisco 1721 or 1841 series. On NOC side all links terminate on same router but mostly specifuc sub interfaces. Like one serial with different sub-interfaces or Vlans Sub interfaces in terms of fibre connection Edwin Ngige
Hi Edwin
Does the fiber and serial interfaces terminate on the same router, both at the NOC and at the customer?
Does the fiber interface for each customer terminate on a dedicated interface on the NOC side that will transition to DOWN in case of a problem?
Regards

Ah, in the case of the VLAN interfaces, you're probably running that trunked into a switch then, and the VLAN subinterface won't show a DOWN when there's a problem? I think in this case, you're going to have to run an routing protocol of sorts, that will actively monitor the state of the connection, and switch to the serial when the fiber goes down. Do you manage all the routers on the customers' sides? -- Hugo Lombard

Or use the same approach you had suggested earlier but introduce some tracking objects to monitor the status of your links or simply put the concept of IP SLA as suggested by tony

It seems my IOS is a bit rusty from being out of the networking game for almost five years :-/ A quick read seems to indicate that this might indeed be a way to go, provided the IOS versions are new enough. Thanks for pointing that out! Reliable Static Routing Backup Using Object Tracking http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_3/12_3x/12_3xe/feature/guide/dbackupx... -- Hugo Lombard

Hi Skunks,
I work with a service/link provider.
