Advice on job change...

Hi guys, I got this job last month in a certain financial institution which is not so big. There are two of us in the IT department, and my partner is not so experienced (I can tell he has limited knowledge in IT, with all due respect to him). I joined as a management trainee, but there is nothing I am learning from my partner. All I have learnt is to do End of Day and Start of Day procedures on the core banking system. On windows administration, I can do a better job that what's been done here. Anyway, I don't mean to crioticize my employer, but I just feel that this job isn't challenging enough. I have sought advice from a few friends, some tell me to move on and others tell me to wait until my probation is over, which sounds logical, but I feel like waiting for my probation to be over would be a waste of time because I am not really building on any experience and besides, I had to stop attending classes for CCNA that I had registered for because I leave work at about 6:30 PM. We'll soon be moving to Westlands, which would mean taking longer to get home, or less time for my studies and stuff like that. So now what do the skunks have to say? Thanks in advance :) Me. -- שִׁמְעוֹן

Hello Simon, I believe that education is an ongoing process. So far, you have basic banking systems' knowledge, but if it feels like you have no reason to wake up in the morning-(You don't look forward to go to work), QUIT ASAP!

@Sam I only meant to ask for advice from people who might be in the know. What's with the nasty attitude? @Dennis I started with google, I only found material talking about HOW TO do the letter and much irrelevant stuff, that's why I turned to the list. Besides, on the list I would get "advice" [notice that word on the subject?] which is actually what I am looking for, rather than a HOW-TO PDF. @Clement thanks, but I only quit if and after I get another place :) I trust that this message clears things up. Thanks again. 2009/7/22 Sam Oduor <sam.oduor@gmail.com>

It sounds like you want to be a techie but accepted a management trainee job. The line I have just written, sounds like a mistake to me......therefore stop digging.ie look for a more challenging job. I have been in the banking sector and you will be doing Start of Day and end of day till kingdom come. Especially if they outsource IT support or are likely to in the future. There are colleges offering CCNA in westlands no? You can study CCNA from home no? On Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 5:19 PM, Sam Oduor <sam.oduor@gmail.com> wrote:

Hey Simon, thnks for that recent tip on SDK on my still troubled c sharp journey. my adv would be that firstly leaving too soon would like bad on your resume and may affect your next job prospects. You can use the less challenging times to eg study and build on better times ahead. Its one of those things one has no control over. :-)

@Simon - i hope your employer has never heard of skunkworks. My opinion - talk to your boss.. explore what other opportunities there are in that current organization that you may be interested in. Also, use the "bored" time to learn about other things in the financial world.. Learn their business, learn the industry, their ways of working. Don't limit yourself to the computer, explore.Maximize the opportunity, while at the same time, don't underperform in your role. Every organisation has something to offer, even if it is "how not to do business." when it comes to challenge - find you passion and look for something along those lines. To leave or not. Hard question. Tito. 2009/7/22 aki <aki275@googlemail.com>

I have tried talking to him, he appears far from enthused whenever I talk to him about anything except when we are talking about businesses one can start. he likes talking about bakeries and fertilizer production. An out of the box suggestion; those times you are idle, try to figure out how someone can gain unauthorized access to the core banking system. Since you are familiar with CCNA, you could start with the network. Yes I know it might be extremely hard but that only means that you have to look harder and read more manuals, thus keeping you busy. But based on your description of your boss, he sounds like the sorta dude who will fire you before you can even finish saying "Hey boss, I found a way to hack..." Chuks would call it Penetration Testing :-) Or maybe, learn a totally new programming language, create an application which will be doing those boring BOF and EOF operations for you, thus eliminating sources of boredom from your day to day life. Jokes aside, if you have no passion for what you are doing, there be no need to do it. On Thu, Jul 23, 2009 at 9:53 AM, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:

@Simon - i hope your employer has never heard of skunkworks.
You mean the dude I am with in IT?? I am sure he never has. But what I have said is the truth anyway.
Every organisation has something to offer, even if it is "how not to do business."
I have tried talking to him, he appears far from enthused whenever I talk to him about anything except when we are talking about businesses one can start. he likes talking about bakeries and fertilizer production. [I'm dead serious] By the way, underperforming in my riole is unfathomable, my role involves routine work. When I come up with ideas like establishing a domain, he looks at me like I'm being ridiculous. Can you imagine UUNET had to redo the physical network here?? Wanna know why? They were using the *bus topology*.. not in the 70s, in the 2000s. Don't you just pity me?
when it comes to challenge - find you passion and look for something along those lines.
I have tried that, but there is so little that I can learn here. I am trying to study how the banking system operates because all I have been taught is routine work.. like when branches close for the day, do end-of-day like this [proceeds to demonstrate]
To leave or not. Hard question.
This I must and will surely do, God willing, only that I am not sure when is the best time.
Tito.
Thanks, really. More comments welcome :)

Actually, I have dome some stuff using VBScript. I better not go into detail here. You don't even need to do a pen test to hack this network. All you need to do is find a free web proxy from a certain country coz the guys who did this LAN didn't use private IPs like 192.168.*.* they used public IPs from that country. So easy to hack, ain't it??? I have created a backdoor, not for any evil intention, but for supporting our upcountry branches where I take over a user's machine, say in Eldoret and install Kaspersky for him while he watches the mouse pointer move by itself with his jaw on the floor coz talking the guys through an installation can be detrimental to your mental health, trust me. I have no need to hack their system, all I want is a challenging career.. a place where I am learning stuff, not doing stuff and have my boss ask me "how did you do that??" But I think I will wait as peter has advised, and hope that something cool will come out of it. Thanks, but keep the comments flowing :) 2009/7/23 I. Ati <mueni0@gmail.com>

@Simon - i hope your employer has never heard of skunkworks.
You mean the dude I am with in IT?? I am sure he never has. But what I have said is the truth anyway.

@Kibe, I am cautious of social engineers. Note that I have avoided mentioning the country whose IP block we are using and many other things? By the way, we recieve calls from impersonators who call from "Oracle Dubai" asking what banking applications we use and such questions and when they ask for my email address, I give them my defunct yahoo email. I don't divulge any info on where I work, IP addresses, domain names etc, ama I have without knowing it? 2009/7/23 kihu kibe <kihukibe@gmail.com>

I have no need to hack their system, all I want is a challenging career.. a place where I am learning stuff, not doing stuff and have my boss ask me "how did you do that??"
But I think I will wait as peter has advised, and hope that something cool will come out of it. Thanks, but keep the comments flowing :)

Simon, I thinking u r the type that should be shredded n fed to the gorillas (I'm serious here)!! How many companies do u happen to know that r retrenching? If u feel like it, quit n join the masses!! Harsh words but its simply the truth according to me!! By the way, banking is the most boring thing I've ever been into!! But here is an opportunity to sharpen your skills n do stuff!! I've been doing the said routine work for like one n a half yrs now. I agree with you, most of the banking systems including mine have the worst security holes but if you inform the superiors (most of whom r old n uneducated (old here refered to the guys who fear technology)), they tell you they'll look into it!! I derive fun {evil grin} watching the IT manager googling n calling support companies to come n deal with a .vbs virus script n issuing memos to the whole bank!! Contact me offlist for more.................. On Thu, Jul 23, 2009 at 12:28 PM, Faith Nkatha <nqatha@gmail.com> wrote:

Dear Simon, My 2 cnts worth. I see you in a position of uncertainty but may be able to guide you from some simple questions towards the positive? 1. What do you like about the job that is making you negotiate about the process of leeving / not leeving ? 2. What is your ideal job ? Define this clearly 3. When do you think you will reach there ? 2months 2years 5 years 4. What is your 5-10year plan? Answers to these may be your solution. Now the part that is sharing, not advice as I believe you are fully capable of making the right decision (follow your heart and not your mind). If I was in your position and I have in certain occasions always remember that the food in your platter comes from a higer being; God. Not your boss and not any administration or organisation. So you can quite any time you want to..... But there is a but, when you joined as a managment trainee you commited to join that organisation and therefore the business trusted you and commited funds. Probation is a period of learning each other ie staff <>employer. They have committed time and money by that TRUST. Dont lose it over boredome or over not knowing the next {mordern} line of code. Now why do you think your manager does not want to discuss business plans with you. Reflect on your title, you are a managment trainee. They probably want to impart skills to you first but may be waiting for you to mature into the art of management. Not all business plans are feasible, and unless commited on paper your plans are just ideas on paper. Learn to be led before becoming a leader. I am sure he/she is looking at your potential. It took 9months at least for yourself to be born. Why do you want to rush that in your professional life ? Finally I do quote the 7 habits of highly effective people, that have helped me in the Business jungle. Note I do not remember the author but these words are not my own:- *Habit 1: Be Proactive* Change starts from within, and highly effective people make the decision to improve their lives through the things that they can influence rather than by simply reacting to external forces. *Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind* Develop a principle-centered personal mission statement. Extend the mission statement into long-term goals based on personal principles. *Habit 3: Put First Things First* Spend time doing what fits into your personal mission, observing the proper balance between production and building production capacity. Identify the key roles that you take on in life, and make time for each of them. *Habit 4: Think Win/Win* Seek agreements and relationships that are mutually beneficial. In cases where a "win/win" deal cannot be achieved, accept the fact that agreeing to make "no deal" may be the best alternative. In developing an organizational culture, be sure to reward win/win behavior among employees and avoid inadvertantly rewarding win/lose behavior. *Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood* First seek to understand the other person, and only then try to be understood. Stephen Covey presents this habit as the most important principle of interpersonal relations. Effective listening is not simply echoing what the other person has said through the lens of one's own experience. Rather, it is putting oneself in the perspective of the other person, listening empathically for both feeling and meaning. *Habit 6: Synergize* Through trustful communication, find ways to leverage individual differences to create a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts. Through mutual trust and understanding, one often can solve conflicts and find a better solution than would have been obtained through either person's own solution. *Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw* Take time out from production to build production capacity through personal renewal of the physical, mental, social/emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Maintain a balance among these dimensions. I hope this will help. Let me know if you need calrification. Thank you Best regards Athar

Hi simon, I go with tito on this. As you know, there's so much that's coming up within the banking industry as far as technology is concerned. The first option that the IT firm to whom the services will be outsourced will be to get a well versed technical person with an understanding of the banking industry, especially at an operational level. Don't be in a rush to change so quickly. Prod your boss to get you to more challenging positions. You're a management trainee <http://www.calmis.ca.gov/file/occguide/managtrn.htm> - that's a person who's taken through every aspect of a company to understand it as they are groomed to take up the challenge of management. it's not an opportunity given to many and this allows for you to ask for a challenge whenever you feel that you've gained the understanding of a certain task or operation. Challenge your boss to use your skills and need to learn to grow the company also and you just might get more. I started off in customer service but ensured that i was in IT, sales, logistics and as much as i could do... and it's helped a great deal. If the boss is not enthusiastic about this, leave! Thanks Faith, but I should have mentioned that the management traineeship is only on paper. I am actually a tech support dude. Here they don't do what you describe - taking someone round the place and having him learn how the place operates. the first assignment is something like "so and so cannot print, go and sort him out... by the way, ever worked with a dot matrix printer??" Now about CISSP, is there a way I can have the DVD uploaded to my.co.ke/pub??? Admins??? 2009/7/23 Faith Nkatha <nqatha@gmail.com>
You're a management trainee <http://www.calmis.ca.gov/file/occguide/managtrn.htm>- that's a person who's taken through every aspect of a company to understand it as they are groomed to take up the challenge of management. it's not an opportunity given to many and this allows for you to ask for a challenge whenever you feel that you've gained the understanding of a certain task or operation. Challenge your boss to use your skills and need to learn to grow the company also and you just might get more. I started off in customer service but ensured that i was in IT, sales, logistics and as much as i could do... and it's helped a great deal. If the boss is not enthusiastic about this, leave!

Every organisation has something to offer, even if it is "how not to do business."
when it comes to challenge - find you passion and look for something along those lines.
To leave or not. Hard question.
Tito.

Hey Simon, thnks for that recent tip on SDK on my still troubled c sharp journey. my adv would be that firstly leaving too soon would like bad on your resume and may affect your next job prospects. Hi guys,
I got this job last month in a certain financial institution which is not so big.
Thanks in advance :)
Me.

-- Q: Why are politicians proof of reincarnation? A: You just can't get that screwed up in one lifetime.

I realy find your questions strange, very strange that you even posted it on this list. Were you fixed on this job? If not then you saw the job, read the requirements, read the qualification and applied for it. You were interviewed and during the interview am sure the interviewer asked you why you wanted to take the job and you gave your reasons... probably the interviewer further briefed you on your deliverables for that job, you went ahead to accept. What shocks me further is the fact that you joined as Management Trainee and you are asking for an Engineer role?... I know MTs are required to be all rounded before being posted to a particular department. Am going to give you a life time solution, 1. Focus - Know what you want, how you want it and when you want it 2. Passion - discover what you are passionate about... is it Sys Admin, is it Dev, or is it Management... build your skills arround it 3. Patience - if you are focused and found a job you are passionate about please be patient, it takes time to get there.
