@Simon - i hope your employer has never heard of skunkworks.
My opinion - talk to your boss.. explore what other opportunities there are in that current organization that you may be interested in. Also, use the "bored" time to learn about other things in the financial world.. Learn their business, learn the industry, their ways of working. Don't limit yourself to the computer, explore.Maximize the opportunity, while at the same time, don't underperform in your role. Every organisation has something to offer, even if it is "how not to do business."
when it comes to challenge - find you passion and look for something along those lines.

Hey Simon, thnks for that recent tip on SDK on my still troubled c sharp journey. my adv would be that firstly leaving too soon would like bad on your resume and may affect your next job prospects. You can use the less challenging times to eg study and build on better times ahead. Its one of those things one has no control over. :-)
