Macbook pro late 2011 hdd failure

My macbook hard drive is failing s.m.a.r.t with no prior problems. I recently upgraded from 10.7.5 to 10.8.2 but I doubt that could be the cause. It started with osx refusing to boot and soon it could only open recovery. The machine is only about 8 months old and this is highly unusual no? I have windows on a bootcamp partition but should this be an issue? This should be covered by warranty shouldn't it?

@Mark, That is covered by warranty. I don't think installing any software on the Mac voids your warranty so bootcamp, Unix, etc on the Mac should be perfectly legal. I believe warranty is usually on hardware. Software can be reinstalled. On 18 February 2013 08:49, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

had the same issue on an imac...after upgrade failed but restored to factory osx. try reinstaling previous os but if its under warranty should be covered if its a hardware issue but for spares takes 3 to 4wks or even more depending on where u purchased it. Went to the Elite digital service center and they say that though I amunder warranty, they charge a service charge for macs not bought at their shops. And my warranty is still valid for harddisk replacement though. I happen not to know where this macbook was bought just that the shop is in town. Would anyone know of an apple reseller in town? Authorised Apple resellers are countable on one hand; and last time I checked, none of them is in the CBD. MacBook Pros have international warranty so where you bought the Mac does not really matter (although proof of purchase is sometimes required) I would recommend you visit Personal Systems LTD. on Limuru Rd. just after City Park, the building is called Regal Plaza, I have dealt with them and their service is commendable! Give them a try. On 19 February 2013 08:28, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

One more shop, at Yaya.

Thanks guys, Will look for time and go take it get replaced. In the meantime I did some gymnastics to get mountain lion running again on the disk. Have a partition with windows software and data that is more important and as far as I can tell the reallocated sector count is not going higher. So ill risk it till then. Data is backed up though. Two colleagues of mine faced the same issue recently, and sadly there couldn't find a fix. I believe there is a reported problem with upgrade of 2011 MacBook Pros to Mountain Lion. Apple support forums should also shed some light. On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 4:31 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

The solution for cloning the drives and forcing an installation is what I used from the forums. This >> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190026?start=0&tstart=0 to be precise. It seems to be a common error I wonder why it is not being acknowledged by the apple guys. On Fri, Feb 22, 2013 at 6:34 PM, Nicholas Loki <lokimwenga@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks guys,
Will look for time and go take it get replaced. In the meantime I did some gymnastics to get mountain lion running again on the disk. Have a partition with windows software and data that is more important and as far as I can tell the reallocated sector count is not going higher. So ill risk it till then. Data is backed up though.
