Good People, I've started using Airtel recently since some people "Misused 'Unlimited internet' " and our speeds were being throttled at 128 Kilobits/Sec(16 Kilobytes/Sec) download. Even though the speed is very good, the connection keeps going off every few minutes and back on. Does anyone here have a solution for that? The solution I was given by their customer care did not work! Thank you!

Hi, I have been using airtel 3g for soe time without hiccups. This is how to fix the problem I figured that not all base stations have the 3g signal, so the signal is not as strong if you are far away from a base station that has it. So all you need to do is make sure that you find a location where you get as many bars on your modem as possible and make sure your modems stays there. You can use a USB extension cable to achieve this. That worked for me. On Mon, Apr 23, 2012 at 9:50 AM, Moses Muya <mouzmuyer@gmail.com> wrote:

I think we are expecting too much and paying too little for it. Look at the Internet charges and associated speed on most developed countries. Unless you are willing to pay more for unlimited Internet its not possible for ISPs and Telcos to offer it. Looking at the cost of setting up 3G/4G networks and the limited radio resource its just hard to sustain the kind of data rates at the current prices. -- Regards, Job Njogu Muriuki, Phone: (+254) - 722906324 | 736333075 Skype: heviejob | Yahoo: heviejob Address: 42665 00100 Nrb

@Job, You know how Kenyans love complaining? Personally, I have never used the unlimited Internet. I didn't even buy into the idea from Safaricom/Orange because it did not quite make sense to me given the initial complaints I was hearing. Problem is Kenyan users want the packages formulated their way, not along the providers' business models. My only complaint is one: I need the coverage everywhere, Kenyawide, not in some "data belts". They can charge whatever they want. In any case I will always find what suits my usage patterns, and pocket! -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. The country's problem is that people do not have any other ISPs other than Telcos. So no fiber or WiFi at home where we can use "unlimited" , hence telcos have to bear the brunt . ISPs are busy "investing" in metro fiber which supposedly gives more value to their shareholders. As such, Haile Selassie avenue is very valuable, with 6 cables running down the street. When Kenya Power embarks on the Fiber to the home grid, shareholders shall be astonished by the huge profits ISPs will not make from their metro fiber. Still on metro fiber, I have seen buildings where ISPs have fiber to the building, and several microwave dishes atop the same building.

@Dennis, Will you buy Internet from KPLC?? On Mon, Apr 23, 2012 at 11:54, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

I am not sure if many Kenyans really have faith in KPLC to deliver any service especially internet service. Their motivation to deliver internet to your house may probably have nothing to do with delivering blazingly fast internet to you and may actually have to do with what have to be gained by the top dogs at KPLC from the fiber-to-your-house contract. And this being an election year, I have my doubts about the transparency of some of these things KPLC is doing. Not being to reliably deliver an essential service like power really undermines KPLC's ability to deliver anything else. And as I have said before, this have nothing to do with poor infrastructural but poor management. I remember just a few years ago when KPLC was under contract management from managers seconded from Manitoba and I believe there were no frequent blackout then. As soon as Kenyans took over, all hell broke loose. KPLC is just incompetent. As much as I hate to say it. Lazy, and incompetent.

Kenya Power IS NOT delivering Internet to your house. They are building a fibre network to your house, with the aim of coming up with a smart Grid (GIYF) . You still need to get an ISP to supply you with Internet.

It doesn't matter, whatever they build to your house will just be as unreliable. They mere involvement render the whole project infeasible.

@Job You see, it has nothing to do with people's 'too much expectations' and 'poor payments'! Users did not come up with the pricing, these MNOs did! Queen Bee even went ahead to call it 'Unlimited Internet'! If one pays for 'Unlimited Internet' ,should they expect to get 16KBps? Moreover, Safaricom kept people guessing for close to two weeks on what was going on since the speeds were rubbish(forgive my French). Nobody said users could not or did not want to pay Ksh.23,000 to get a proper connection but would you seek to pay Safaricom that amount if they were offering the same services for Ksh.3,000 per month? Aye aye... Since my post did not yield any fruits I decided to do a little digging and experimentation to find a solution. I'm sharing the solution here since it could be of help to someone else. I am using an Android device so naturally this solution only works on Android - I will experiment on Apple iOS devices if someone tells me they have the same problem. 1.0 Dial *#*#4636#*#* 2.0 Select 'Phone Information' from the resulting menu 3.0 On 'Set preferred network type' select 'WCDMA Only' as opposed to 'WCDMA preferred' 4.0 Exit the menu while facing Mount Kenya and utter these words three times,"Uninterrupted 3G sasa tuko pamoja" 5.0 Surf away in peace... Known Issue(from my experience): Since you have effectively chosen to use the 3G network ONLY, your device will lose ALL connectivity, voice and data, any time you move to a place that is not covered with 3G. In such a case, simply carry out the above steps but select 'WCDMA preferred' and your device will reconnect. Nobody said users could not or did not want to pay Ksh.23,000 to get a proper connection but would you seek to pay Safaricom that amount if they were offering the same services for Ksh.3,000 per month?

I think we are expecting too much and paying too little for it. Look at the Internet charges and associated speed on most developed countries. Unless you are willing to pay more for unlimited Internet its not possible for ISPs and Telcos to offer it. Looking at the cost of setting up 3G/4G networks and the limited radio resource its just hard to sustain the kind of data rates at the current prices.

Disclaimer : You do this at your own risk, if you ruin your tablet or phone, you are on your own! :)

You see, it has nothing to do with people's 'too much expectations' and 'poor payments'! Users did not come up with the pricing, these MNOs did! @Solomon Thank you. However, I'm not very far from the nearest BTS and I have full bars on my device. I do not think it is a problem with the reception. As I mentioned, the speed is very good - more than I need for most things - but it keeps disconnection every few minutes for about 30 secs to a minute and then it reconnects. Could you do me a favour? Send me the settings you are using e.g APN,Proxy,Port, e.t.c. Thank you. On 23 April 2012 10:16, solomon kariri <solomonkariri@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi, I have been using airtel 3g for soe time without hiccups. This is how to fix the problem I figured that not all base stations have the 3g signal, so the signal is not as strong if you are far away from a base station that has it. So all you need to do is make sure that you find a location where you get as many bars on your modem as possible and make sure your modems stays there. You can use a USB extension cable to achieve this. That worked for me.

Good People,
I've started using Airtel recently since some people "Misused 'Unlimited internet' " and our speeds were being throttled at 128 Kilobits/Sec(16 Kilobytes/Sec) download. Even though the speed is very good, the connection keeps going off every few minutes and back on. Does anyone here have a solution for that? The solution I was given by their customer care did not work! Thank you!
