Help With Toshiba Laptop Screen Brightness & CPU Fan

Hi, I recently installed Fedora 16 on a Toshiba U500 laptop (as a dual boot with Windows 7). However: 1) The CPU fan does not run when in Fedora hence making the laptop overheat (though the fan works fine in Windows). 2) Secondly, I am unable to reduce the brightness of the screen using the keyboard function keys. Would like to know if anyone has encountered such issues before and if so, how they fixed both (i.e. enabling cpu fan and adjusting screen brightness through keyboard function keys)? I have tried the following from online forums: 1) To install the toshiba omnibook drivers. 2) To add the line "echo 10 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THZN/polling_frequency" to "/etc/rc.d/rc.local", in order to cause the temperature to be read every 10 secs so I don't have to worry about reading it via an application such as cat in a loop. Neither of the options work, kindly assist. Regards, Michael

Try Fedora forums, please, if you are in a hurry. I think most guys here are on Ubuntu and Windows. On Fri, Nov 9, 2012 at 6:24 AM, Michael Marosi <michaelmarosi@gmail.com>wrote:

Try "yum install acpid" . I think you can boot without ACPI cause it takes a short time, unless you want to Google on how to integrate ACPI into Grub2.

Thanks for the tips, I'm trying them out, shall let you know how it goes. Regards, Michael On Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 2:27 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, Managed to get things working: i) For CPU fan: Installed the acpi daemon and lm_sensors packages - the fan now works as it should. ii) For Screen brightness: I found a manual hack to use on the command line: *sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=60* (where B = value of the brightness indicated as a number between [0-99] with 0 being the lowest and 99 being the highest value of brightness). It's not the most elegant solution, but it works. Thanks for the tips pple. Regards, Michael On Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 4:57 PM, Michael Marosi <michaelmarosi@gmail.com>wrote:

I thought such keys should work by default in Gnome, you can try configuring your keyboard and see what happens.

I believe they should but they were not working and they still don't. I tried configuring them but it didn't work. I was able to see from the command line which keys were being pressed but the expected response (for e.g. reduce or increase screen brightness or sound volume) was not working. It was some time ago, will have to look it up again, but should you have any suggestion, feel free to share - I am willing to try. Upgrade to the newest Fedora, but beware the desktop experience changes. use the command preupgrade to do so if you have an unlimited Internet connection. You can then install cinnamon (has its on repo) to provide better desktop usability.

Interesting, will try it over the weekend. Regards, Michael On Fri, Nov 16, 2012 at 3:30 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

The fan is a common issue - Google " Fedora ACPI Fan" Function keys depend on which desktop environment you are using, they all have their own apps to provide the functionality.
