Hi Folks, I have a project to network some houses. These are in some sort of "villa" setup, with trees all around, if that matters. It's somewhere in the bundus but I already have Internet there. I'd like not to lay cables at all as that is so much work:) I'd like to deploy a WLAN so I am looking for an equipment that can transmit a strong signal within a radius of 500metres (max range, actually). I mentioned the trees just in case they may interfere with the signal - just in case. I am no expert in that area. Does someone know of an equipment that is good enough for such a project, yet not so expensive. If it doesn't have to be mounted outdoor the better, but still I am okay with it if it has to use an outdoor antennae. I suppose the antennae should be omnidirectional. The equipment can be either an AP or Router. Which equipment suppliers do I talk to? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

I have found signal boosters to be useless... You could use a standard wifi router with a directional antenna... for instance... the wrt54g router has tnc-rp connector... dlink routers come with a sma-rp connector for an external antenna....

I have used the D-LINK outdoor series (2700AP and others) and they are pretty good and if you throw in an omni-directional antenna and mount the whole system it a central location outside, coverage can exceed 500 metres. You can interconnect many of these as a bridge and increase the coverage that you want. They are also hardy, I have used one for more that 2 years without a single failure. They a bit expensive though and the cheaper indoor ones do not perform well. 2009/6/25 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

I am going to first consider 2700AP with omni antennae though I need to ask you about the antennae you are using. I have the following choice: *ANT24-0800* *D-Link 8dBi Gain Outdoor Omni-Directional Antenna (Pole) * *ANT24-0801* *D-Link 8.5dBi Gain Outdoor Directional Antenna (Panel) * *ANT24-1201* *D-Link 12dBi Gain Outdoor Directional Antenna (Pole)* * ANT24-1202* *D-Link 12dBi Gain Outdoor Omni-Directional Antenna * *ANT24-1400* *D-Link 14dBi Gain Outdoor Directional Antenna * * ANT24-1500 * *D-Link 15dBi Gain Outdoor Omni-Directional Antenna * *ANT24-1800* *D-Link 18dBi Gain Outdoor Directional Antenna (Panel) * *ANT24-1801* *D-Link 18dBi Gain Outdoor Directional Antenna (Pole)* *ANT24-2100* *D-Link 21dBi Gain Outdoor Directional Antenna (Dish) * *ANT70-0800* *D-LINK 2.4/ 5GHz 8dBi omni-derectional oudoor antenna ( Lower band )* *ANT24-CB09N* *D-Link 9M Antenna Cable Kit (N to N) * Not sure what is what here:-) Which one do you use amongst the above? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

My antenna is: *ANT24-1500 * *D-Link 15dBi Gain Outdoor Omni-Directional Antenna The directional ones are also good for smaller point-to-point networks. * 2009/6/25 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

Thank you. Now I have a clue. What the coverage of your AP? Anything else you'd like to share from your experience? Any gotchas that may make me sleepless? :) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

The2700AP is a pretty simple AP to install, with POE, allow you to use web client or telnet to configure. You may need to check the firmware and upgrade to the latest which adds some features like DHCP just in case you need them. It is outdoor so make sure insulation from rain especially where the antennas connect is good. I I normally get around 600 metres coverage, but that will depend on the environment and sometimes the signal can be low indoors but pretty usable. 2009/6/25 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

I think that's what I am going for, but... When you deployed this solution, what swayed you from deploying Mikrotik? This is for my own "sanity check":) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

I had not used Mikrotik before so I simply went for the D-LINK and I was not sure they are good for local WLANs. From what I had heard, Mikrotiks seemed to be perfect choice for Point to Point links. Bu 2009/6/25 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>
