This will depend on : - Sensitivity of the data. - Size of data to be backed up - Budget For non-sensitive data that's not too bulky; say under 2GB, I'd go with free online solutions eg DropBox. Else, keep on googling for credible commercial solutions

Must he spend?? I think it depends on other factors than "how much he is willing to spend". Your thinking around this is quite pedestrian! 1. What type of data he needs to backup remotely 2. How often that data changes - hence how often to backup/sync 3. How often that data needs to be accessed and the size of the data - which determines how much bandwidth he'll need. 4. Volume of data - which will determine if he can go with the free services or opt for the pay options On 14 March 2013 11:31, zuhair jaffer <zuhair.jaffer@kdn.co.ke> wrote:

Ok, so now let’s say you have the details of the sensitivity, volume, bandwidth etc. What comes next? You still need to know what the budget is. If they are willing to pay; lets say $20 a month, why would they go for dropbox when they can have their own server on the cloud? My point is, the world as it is today will offer solutions depending on your budget, the rest just comes in second. Not necessarily so Zuhair. I side with Wash on this. Even if I am willing to spend, I may not choose to go that route if there's some free alternative that squarely fit's my requirements. Case in point : - Once in a while I find myself with work related 'MS Project' (.mpp) documents that I need to view. One option is to purchase the MS Project module but I choose to use OpenProj/ProjectLibre.

That's just it. Your budget for viewing .mpp is preferably kshs 0.00. But that's still a budget! The guy who is willing to buy MS Project, and has the budget for it, will get a different experience. I still stick to the fact that a budget is required first. But that's just my opinion. I disagree; My requirement was to get a solution that allows me to view .mpp files!! That was the Primary consideration! The cost then came on as an elimination factor. Question : What if the ONLY way ever for me to ever view .mpp files was through buying a crystal ball worth 200 Chinese Yen. Would it help if I stuck to my Kes 500/= budget?

Money is the focus; because, when dealing with generic requirements, such as online backups, it helps to understand where the person stands. I am not saying the other requirements don't matter, they are very significant, but I have dealt with too many who are happy until they learn the cost. So every time someone asks you for a solution, your first question would be "what is your budget"? :-) Sounds sensible, somehow. From now on, that would be the first question I'll be asking whenever I am approached. It makes sense to monetize everything. On 14 March 2013 12:41, zuhair jaffer <zuhair.jaffer@kdn.co.ke> wrote:

Nothing personal. Using official e-mail address with company disclaimers on a mailing list is against netiquette, IIRC. That's nothing personal. On 14 March 2013 15:46, Thuo Wilson <lixton@gmail.com> wrote:

Sorry to ask, but are you Indian by any chance (no prejudice intended)? I am just wondering why money is your first focus. I do not agree with you that the first thing to think about when looking for a solution should be money. You first qualify the available options based on your requirements/considerations then look at the most cost-effective. On 14 March 2013 11:46, zuhair jaffer <zuhair.jaffer@kdn.co.ke> wrote:

I think it depends on other factors than "how much he is willing to spend". Your thinking around this is quite pedestrian!
1. What type of data he needs to backup remotely 2. How often that data changes - hence how often to backup/sync 3. How often that data needs to be accessed and the size of the data - which determines how much bandwidth he'll need. 4. Volume of data - which will determine if he can go with the free services or opt for the pay options

This is apropos of my previous email about getting off of PST files and using gmail. The great benefit there is that your data is already on the cloud, backups are massively faster and easier (to the degree that you even need them). I always advocate the following: 1. Try to have master data as high up the chain as possible so that devices like laptops and phones can benefit from a wipe strategy rather than a restore strategy after being lost or stolen. The same goes with servers. Ideally servers would just be local caches of data stored in a data center and ideally in a redundant cloud architecture. This isn't always possible but you can get pretty close these days. 2. I personally like to back up to S3 via Arq ( http://www.haystacksoftware.com/arq/). I really like separating the software from the storage because it allows for specialization. S3 is the most successful publicly-accessible storage solution ever created and nobody comes close to catching up to it. Arq is a great piece of Mac-specific software which is well worth it. There are other solutions for Linux or Windows but I highly recommend using a solution that backs to S3. 3. Since you probably don't have tight control on all the machines and since getting everything on the cloud is difficult, you should check out something like Synology NAS ( http://www.synology.com/products/spec.php?product_name=DS112%2B&lang=enu#p_s...). Their devices can back up to S3 so you have nearline storage of your assets automatically backed up to S3. -Adam https://twitter.com/varud https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Thu, Mar 14, 2013 at 11:46 AM, zuhair jaffer <zuhair.jaffer@kdn.co.ke>wrote:
