Hi guys Be careful when you buy goods online even on Jumia. You will find new counterfeit items there too. Yes they sell original products like the Samsung I'm using that I got there in 2015 but they sell fake too especially accessories like power banks, earphones, chargers etc. I ordered Sony earphones for 1000 only to receive counterfeit ones that you can get for sh 150 on Luthuli Avenue. I raised the alarm on twitter and many replied with how they have received fake stuff too including clothing. Jumia replied and told me I can return them for a refund but I had already got rid of them out of frustration. I would advice visiting original physical stores like Anisuma, Nakumat and Safaricom shops. Be careful. Regards, Gachanja.

Gachanja, I was also sold (on Jumia) what I believe are fake Sony headphones last year. Since they weren't too awful and that I didn't want to have to wait to be refunded then look for some others, I just let it be. Thanks for confirming my suspicions... I am still skeptical about buying things online and having them delivered to me. What I do, is at the end before checkout they show who fulfills the order and I just go and buy the item from them. It is cheaper since I can bargain. That works for me for now though it beats the benefits of online shopping. Jumia links you, the customer, to a vendor. Their urge is for the commission, for better business, they need a quality assuarance department to ensure they deal with reputable vendors who don't do counterfeit stuff. Sadly, such department doesn't exist with them. My weakness, advantage as well is that before buying a gadget/equipment locally, i have to view, touch & bargain. Locally, online is not an option. Tho' Amazon and likes is an option, they have never dissapointed when it comes to quality.

I had a similar experience. Since I consider myself an innovator, I decided to try out the Jumia system and stress test it. I bought 3 products, and two did not meet the specifications. One of them was clearly not what was advertised, so I returned the two items and remained with one. I was advised by Jumia that its best not to pay for an item if it does not meet your specifications. Open it before you pay the rider. But my refund is being processed. The positives are: you can pay on delivery, their customer care responds to emails, and refunds are processed. Despite the hiccups, we as changemakers should believe in the system for e-commerce to work. --- *Beverly from Jumia Customer Care*(Jumia Kenya) Jul 26, 12:13 CET Dear Mwendwa, We hope this Email finds you well. Hi guys
Be careful when you buy goods online even on Jumia. Be careful.

I am also a victim of 'counterfeit' goods on another Kenyan e-commerce site (http://kotec.co.ke/). I have bought several gadgets thru them and I kinda trusted them til they finally gave me a really raw deal. I purchased what they had described as an Android smart phone on their site only for me to get a 'mulika mwizi' kind of phone. The parcel was delivered to my workplace then but I was in a meeting so I instructed the receptionist to collect it on my behalf and settle the bill. I complained to the customer care as well as the MD (who is apparently owns Kotec) to have the phone exchanged but they rudely shocked me by saying they could exchange coz I had already opened the parcel. Wondering how else I would have known it was the wrong item!!! So to me I have reservations about the Kenya online shops, I'd rather take the pain to locate physical stores and get my stuff directly from the vendors. Regards, Kisovi. Did you write a review about the product you purchased from them? While this thread is bound to create an unfair venting advantage to a few electronics retailers, techies who think they can create a better portal or the regular naysayer, it would be unfair to assume that Jumia will gladly deliver to you a substandard or low quality product just to make a sale. Lets learn to review the products we purchase, good or bad, and eventually create an open feedback loop for quality control which can be used to question why the product is still listed for sale if it doesn't measure up. This is a system that is working. If they allowed a return, and refunded your money, that is the best they can do. It may be a completely genuine mistake to supply a 3G version of the similar 4G version. I've actually ever bought a 3G phone on a physical brick and mortar shop, thinking it's 4G. The manufacturer had the same phone make with different bands. And I never bothered to confirm or ask. Jumia's customer care does not seem very syncronised, but at least it works, and they answer to email, and process refunds. AND the best part, they allow you to scrutinise the goods at your premise before parting with your hard earned money. My take, the e-commerce ecosystems is maturing, and gamechangers like Jumia is all we need, albeit foreign. If you are a Jumia rep, have them give me a voucher for vouching for you :)

Quite interesting how many of us have had an experience with Jumia. I once bought a laptop from them and what followed is a story for another day. But as somebody put it, reviews are important and hopefully we shall one day get there. @Alvin, and that is how you have lost business you never knew you had. And by you, I mean all other vendors who are shying away from embracing some form of e-commerce at least for their hardware, for whichever reason. Yes, you will continue selling, yes you will continue expanding, but you could have done that last year simply by changing your *delivery model*. That said, I know next to nothing about running a business, so all this is just opinion. On Wed, Jul 27, 2016 at 9:35 AM, Alvin Jason Ochieng <ajochola@gmail.com> wrote:

Jumia is the real deal. I did a blog post on my experience with them http://lord.me.ke/e-commerce-is-here-with-us-in-africa/ The MPESA refund message from jumia’s payment partner KGQ8BIGH2Y Confirmed. You have received Ksh3,898.00 from ECART SERVICES KENYA LIMITED 873250 on 26/7/16 at 7:38 PM New M-PESA balance is Ksh5,265.90. Buy goods with M-PESA. Well, e-commerce is here with us. And it’s working. On Jul 27, 2016 1:08 PM, "Geoffrey Karani via skunkworks" < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Talking of "fake" I think it all boils down to an individual. Some people are willing to buy the "fake" at low cost without much ado and deal with its problems later. Fake in this case I presume means replica of the genuine

Well well,
If Jumia give refunds then that's a positive. Quite a change from the "Goods once sold can't be returned." that I saw on countless receipts from shops when growing up.

@Gachanja, why not put the link of the fake item here? It might help someone else

I just left Jumia offices on Wetlands to complain on the same and why the same fake item is still on the site and they say they can't withdraw it. They would refund me if I had the item but the the item is still on site and being advertised everwhere. Pains my heart. I dont even want a refund but it would be my joy go see them sell original stuff only. They say they can't open a product to confirm if it's original so they'll deliver it to you the way it is. I'm disappointed
