CID Computer Forensics Labs

Hey Skunks I heard in the grapevines that the Kenyan C.I.D have invested in the latest Computer Forensics Equipment and Software and that the Cyber Cops are really good with recovering data from any memory devices and Disks so beware skunkers.....anyone with 411 on this

I haven't heard anything about it, may be it is being kept top secret but it is a welcome move though I doubt they are as good as it is claimed. And now that they have this lab, can they start with those server hard disks belonging to a certain bank (was it Euro Bank?) a couple years ago that were smashed with a sledge hammer? NSIS always had such technology for a long time. I'm just wondering why CID have to have their own? Both are funded by the govt! Maybe I should find out if the CIA and the FBI do share any technological resources to start with. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

I believe we all have tools that can be used to recover data from such devices. But lets see if they can do so from damaged e.g. by fire storage devices 2009/6/24 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

This is where regulation comes in. The CBK has regulations that demand that all Banks have a solid BCP. It is expected that such kind of plan would include backups that can be recoverable and that go back in time for several years. So here its just a matter of demanding for the backed up data and suing the senior management or Directors if that data is not available. Oh yes. My point is this: With that kind of regulation, then destroying a piece of hardware is useless as the backup requirement is there. If you have not kept a good backup history then we sue you for that. The penalties should be heavy. This brings up the issue of the data protection Bill which we keep asking about. 2009/6/24 chuks Jonia <chuksjonia@gmail.com>

@Chuks, is the time taken to decrypt a HDD proportional to the processing power you throw at the task? If so, suppose the CID hired a few botnets and asked IBM to demonstrate some of their Blue Genes (with veiled promises of sweet contracts to supply the govt core network), would that make the decryption more achievable? 2009/6/24 chuks Jonia <chuksjonia@gmail.com>
A heavily encrypted hdd, can take CIA years to decrypt, i wonder if the KE cops will be able to handle any drive encrypted by a skunker.

CID have to have their own? Both are funded by the govt! Maybe I should find out if the CIA and the FBI do share any technological resources to start with.

I heard the NSA was a huge contributor to the original design and implementation of most of these cryptos in the 70s and the 80s so I guess they had their interests taken care of from the beginning. All they need to do with the vendors of these systems nowadays is promise them huge federal contracts in exchange for back door access. Same thing they do with telco, allow us access to all your voice and data system and contracts follow. Some telcoms like Verizon refused and they got some lucrative contracts cancelled by the Government. 2009/6/25 Denis G. Wahome <dwahome@gmail.com>

I am not sure the CID is really doing anything, but they may one day spring a surprise on us. I think what we need is a framework on which to setup a cyber law enforcement system and detection system, and either have a dedicated Agency to do this as opposed to having incompetent divisions within the Police, CID, NSIS, City Council doing it. This will achieve better results. One of the 'Angloleasing type' project was something to do with a Security Satellite Network System, this would have been a nice place to start but you know how that ended. Maybe now they will come up with Security Fibre Option Network System, pour in several billions and then discover it is all a fraud aftera couple of years. Honestly, I think we are headed nowhere at the momemt. The change has to come from the top but it seems the political will is not there but we have very smart Kenyas who can do this very well but as everything else in Kenya, you need a political godfather to drive any project to fruitation. And talking of cyber crime, a friend of mine got his Yahoo! account hacked and his password changed, and the clever hacker (probably somewhere in Abuja or Nigeria) send a email to all my friend's contacts, pretending to be my friend and gave a long story of how he lost his wallet in Nigeria while there on some offical trip and now how he needs money for hotel and to get out of there and can you please send something like USD 2,000 urgently by Western Union to Lagos .... 2009/6/25 chuks Jonia <chuksjonia@gmail.com>
By the way guys have u heard about these Cyber Defense and offensive development in the West.

@Philip
I think this is not possible and possible to some extent, the code for the implementation of encryption algorithms is in the public domain accessible to me and you hence open for scrutiny. OTOH,some network equipment vendors i know provide firmware with data intercept capabilities as an a purchase option - though they pre-qualify the purchase of such.

And I don't think the CIA or the NSA takes years to decypt anything. I have heard they have had secret agreements with people who make
encryption
software and algorithms to provide them with back door access. But I am not sure anyway.

@Chuks, is the time taken to decrypt a HDD proportional to the
processing
power you throw at the task? If so, suppose the CID hired a few botnets and asked IBM to demonstrate some of their Blue Genes (with veiled promises of sweet contracts to supply the govt core network), would that make the decryption more achievable?

A heavily encrypted hdd, can take CIA years to decrypt, i wonder if the KE cops will be able to handle any drive encrypted by a skunker.

just a question, as the discussion is kind of confusing but interesting. What are we defending or evaluating against or why would the cid need such a system? imho, any security threat is evaluated on a need be basis as there is no golden rule that would work for any given situation. Each level below has a defensive system. a) Hardware level b) Software level c) Network level d) Physical level.

We need such a system, not only to recover data from smashed hard-disk, but also to prevent security incidents before they happen. You may have heard Dick Cheney say how increase surveillance and wiretapping has helped prevent terrorist strikes which would have happened had these systems not been there. How true that is is debatable, but if there is a chance that having a cyber-crime unit will detect and prevent terrorist strikes and other crimes before they happen I would say we go for it. sorry for the silly question nor not sure if correct to post , whose smashed hdd needs recovering and can this hdd not be sent to certified labs for such ( like blackbox of a plane )? As far as intel agencies go, just like we share info amongst ourselves on tech issues, am sure these agencies also do the same for their issues. Cyber crime : you mean credit card fraud, porno or what? What about the developments ( the papers carried it ) on mpesa being used by bad people. There was a thread recently on this list about sms warnings? The more we dig in, the more confusing it gets... let me avoid being spammy. :-)

as an amatuer photographer, i can tell you pixels are pixels. no matter what you do, it is very difficult to enhance an digital image or video without losing detail. And it is this lack of detail that will make it obvious. Take DTSV sports channels, especially the football ones. on a large tv screen, you can immediately tell as the pixles are flying all over the screen. I dont know how they do it in the movies. please look at this fake image. http://www.worldsfamousphotos.com/tag/fake

I remember once hearing in Numbers (the tv series), the main wiz dude saying that mathematically speaking, am image can be enhanced infinitely. So i guess this was such a line huh. Some time ago I happened to pass by the Tana river bridge on the A06 just when an army trailer carrying one of the infamous tanks had partially overturned just after the bridge. I took a photo using a 1.3mp camera while in a fast moving mat, obviously the picture was blurred. I wondered how such an image could be enhanced but got lost wondering :-) On Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 1:11 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:
