[Event] Developer Forum - Silver Springs Hotel, Sat 19 Dec 9:30 - 1:00

There has been much talk over the past week championed my Aki and Murigi among others concerning the need for developers to come together and share knowledge, wisdom and indeed mistakes in order to stimulate the industry to the next level. In this regard we are organizing a developer forum this weekend, Saturday 19th December at Silver Springs from 9:30. The agenda is simply to meet and share. There will be swag as well to give away. There is no entry fee. Bring yourself and your colleagues. We are encouraging anyone interested in making a short presentation on ANY *technical *topic to participate. It doesn't need to be complex. Come and talk about OOP if you want to. The point, again, is to share. Circulate amongst your peers and friends. Send me a RSVP if interested in attending and/or presenting ( conradakunga@gmail.com)

Hi Conrad, I'll bring me and myself along.

Unprepared more likely. Also many are going home (shags) from tomorrow. Anyway for those of you who need to know the Silver Springs meetings are technical and occur monthly. Jacaranda quarterly meets will be more technocratic. Am looking forward to Conrad facilitating some c# coding standard sessions in the near future - like in Jan 2010. http://www.dennisdoomen.net/2009/03/new-coding-guidelines-for-c-30.html And to those of you who have been inquiring about the ASP.Net MVC program .... This is where it will begin for many of you. Come and take advantage of Conrad .. while he is still willing or able to facilitate these meetings. https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Conrad

Was diverted into town (until 1.30pm) on my way to the meet so ... What disappointed you at the end? We need developers such as yourself to present what you are doing & learning. Sort of like the video done to demonstrate your LED appliance. We are also learning how to 'meet' as we go along. We are working on themes. One month it will be Programming Standards, the next Web (SEO or Usability) standards, the other Animation and so on ... We will go with feedback (public demand). Am pressuring (pursuing) some geeks to style up and present ... It seems many developers want to be pursued to present ... lakini wengi watangoja mpaka ... We need techies with open minds such as those who have worked with Flash but are now learning Silverlight and can present us with two points of view. Alternatively, we need / require developers with different points of views to (be) present and respectfully opinionated (vocal). Since our developers (like the rest of our society) are so unprepared to be transparent, most of us find it hard to expose our knowledge or ignorance. As the current Police spokesman once said (to paraphrase), we cannot expect our Cops to be better than the (corrupt) society from which they come (are recruited) from. http://www.hanselman.com/blog/11TopTipsForASuccessfulTechnicalPresentation.a... These presentations should help slower types such as myself understand stuff we are not willing or able to learn or study on our own (anymore). They will also help developers build up their presentation skills, confidence and reputations in a small forum of 3 to 30 attendees.

http://monty-says.blogspot.com/2009/09/codeplex-foundation-why-is-microsoft.... We cannot ignore FOSS on Windows Server Systems. There have been queries on skunkworks about how to instal PHP (Joomla) on Windows in the Enterprise. There are ASP.Net developers needing to embed Google Earth in their Apps. http://blog.evonet.com.au/post/Integrating-Google-Maps-into-an-ASPNET-page.a... Developers who want to be irrelevant in the Enterprise can ignore Microsoft technologies. Why have Google, Apple & Nokia licensed Microsoft Active Sync? To connect some of their services and (or) to Microsoft Exchange Servers? Is this is not Industrial Realism? So we are going to continue addressing Windows Server Systems without ignoring FOSS Systems & Standards either. If attendees do not PRESENT their FOSS preferences then ..

I’m absolutely mystified by some of the responses on this thread. Guys complained that there needed to be a forum for developers to share and exchange. One was organized. And this is still not good enough? Sometimes I think there is no helping Kenyans. NOBODY except one other person volunteered to come and present. About a quarter of the confirmed attended attended. How does the question of full disclosure arise? The agenda was very clear. ANYONE can come and present on ANY technical topic. There only restriction was to prevent people coming to talk about their pet rabbits and bean farming. How more open can anything get? I wasn’t there towards the end due to the fact that i was traveling but Joseph your criticism is not constructive at all. What is it that you disapproved of so much? And what did you do about it? Guys, don’t expect a developer forum to magically appear. A developer forum is composed of DEVELOPERS. If developers are unwilling to participate then there will be no forum. It is one thing to make noise and complain on mailing lists and then when d-day comes disappear into thin air. There comes a time when you have to put your money where your mouth is. Since I am not the type to be easily cowed I will throw down the gauntlet again. On 23rd January there shall be another developer forum. That is a full month from now and ample time i believe to prepare. I’m fully expecting active participation from those who have been agitating the loudest (here’s looking at you Aki & the rest) and those who didn’t like what we did (here’s looking at you Joseph) Rules of engagement is the same. You can present on ANY technical topic of your choice. I’m even widening it to include business (founding and running IT related businesses). Quorum for me will be at least one other person. Educating one person is ample return for me. Let’s see who’s man enough to walk the talk.

@Rad, I think you have done what was unthinkable and wish you success with it. :-) For me, I've taken this year's assessment of thread responses as an understanding that we may still be ahead of time or communicating with the wrong crowd so have actively moved on with my personal targets on other avenues and will not be actively participating in any events/discussions. Rgds. -- "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." - Henry Ford

I attended though for 45-50 minutes or so and I will attend again whether Brookside, Microsoft, and/or Trust sponsors the event. I will hopefully complete my apps this few weeks(I also have c# to study) I have and I will hopefully present. I will also prepare myself for the code challenge(You'll say it and I'll code so bring it on on 23rd!

I've read this thread with a slight chuckle. Two reasons: - There was an earlier thread on Technical meetings having lower turnouts than 'non-tech' meetings... Its the general trend... -Is there anything wrong with coding in .NET? Microsoft Windows is currently the largest platform to develop for... Care should be taken to throw the baby with the bathwater. I did not attend for various reasons. Hell, I may not even be a 'real' developer bt i think some of us are hitting below the belt. Joseph, .net presenters will present .net. Perl presenters will present perl. Java, ditto. So if there were no presenters on other topics, then wth? And I would think twice before calling another techie ignorant, esp in their field. This is not the first time Linus has been critical like this, whether rightly or wrongly. Remember his comments about GNOME's usability (and then switching back from KDE a few years later), about Con Kolivas' scheduler (which Con abandoned), and about the OpenBSD project's approach to security (and then later apologising for his misunderstanding)? I guess the thing to learn is, everyone has to make his own decisions. Joseph.

Hi Murigi and everyone, Sorry if you found my language less than civil. What I meant was that the speakers kept making snide comments about free software that were simply not true, like they were totally clueless. As for whether one can ignore the Windows API, or whether there's anything wrong with using .NET, I think it's a decision the user has to make for himself. But you should realise that there's life outside .NET and Windows. And for those who value free software, it isn't a hard decision to make. And as for whether it's easier to monetise desktop or Web apps, it really depends on what you're trying to do, and your business model. There's a lot to consider in these things. But also, it's not always about money. Joseph.
