Hi, I had a similar problem and finally got sorted by KRA after several months. What happens is they add VAT obligation to you PIN number. As far as I know, a business in Kenya will need a VAT Certificate even if it has a PIN Certificate. Unless the law changed, VAT is a requisite for many businesses here in Kenya. As long a your business is registered as a Company Limited by either shares or guarantee, it must have a VAT certificate. @ Ann, who told you this? I know there are some guys from KRA on this forum and they can provide us with sufficient answers on this issue. But there is a tax called turn-over tax (hope I got the name right) which is for smaller businesses (with < 5 million annual turnover). I think the tax is 5% of the turnover and that's the ONLY obligation; not VAT obligation, nothing else. I wonder why one would really want to get the VAT cert unless above the 5m category. Infact that's the requirement unless one insists. (wish I knew that then); there is so much to VAT and one should very much aware of that and if not necessary, wait for the business to get to that category and do with the turn-over tax option as per the requirement. @Solomon, If i'm not mistaken, I believe you'll get a certificate of compliance with the turn-over tax obligation alone. I might need to confirm this but I strongly believe is the case. @ Ann, I'm not very sure about the mandatory requirement for a limited company to have VAT cert. But there is a tax called turn-over tax (hope I got the name right) which is for smaller businesses (with < 5 million annual turnover). I think the tax is 5% of the turnover and that's the ONLY obligation; not VAT obligation, nothing else. I wonder why one would really want to get the VAT cert unless above the 5m category. Infact that's the requirement unless one insists. (wish I knew that then); there is so much to VAT and one should very much aware of that and if not necessary, wait for the business to get to that category and do with the turn-over tax option as per the requirement.

Therefore if your registering as a new taxpayer using the online system you should select the VAT obligation, however if you are an existing taxpayer your obligations will appear automatically. It's about two months and no response as yet. I got my company's PIN manually( before they introduced the ITMS) so I only needed the tax obligation to be included in the existing PIN. @Solomon, I agree, it's prudent to start with the TOT because it will suffice. VAT is a bigger responsibility that can wait without one risking non-compliance. @Eric, VAT certificates being phased out; does it mean the paper? so that, the tax obligation(s) relating to someone hasn't changed (if it's VAT or TOT it remains so), only the procedures involved in administration. that's the way i understand it. There is a workshop that takes place in KRA by Tax Payer Education. It's easy to find out about all this and it's very helpful to attend.
