Is it just me seeing that the rate of failure of Western Digital HDD is just too high? Disk failing without notice - just like that - within a very short time - less than 1 year... -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler. Your product was made in the wrong part of China , not genuine

There are fake WD HDDs which have flooded the local market. I had bought one of 320GB last year and had to return it to the vendor who really took me round in circles before asking me to cough up more money for an external HDD of 250GB which I believe is genuine. I think there are blogs that have photos of genuine and fake WD HDDs where you can do a check. On 31 January 2012 16:36, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

This is what I think also. The rate at which I have seen them fail points to this. Luckily, there is also just one supplier involved in all this. I am not going to ask for a replacement of a fake with a possible fake. I need to find a way to pin this supplier down! On Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 16:46, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:

As already seen, the Kenyan way of doing business involves all sorts of shortcuts. Let us pray to the Lord that we shall find an honest business man, and an affordable one too.

Coincidentally, after Alvin posted an advert on this list regarding some WD hard-disks that he had in stock a while back (1st April last year; no kidding ;-)), I contacted him regarding the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 5400RPM model. Hard luck. He had none of those low RPM models. I went ahead and procured a new 750 GB version from amazon.com. The effing disk later conked up some time in Oct/Nov. In my case, this happened while transferring some PS3 game backups onto the disk (I had upgraded the console's internal HDD using the WD disk.) As much as I would admit that the frequent brown-outs occurring at the time may have taken their toll, you have just aroused my curiosity, Wash. My HDD seems to have suffered some serious logical fault.

I have experienced two incidences of failed WD hdd. as a rule, therefore, I keep away from them. I don't know that you can pin it to one supplier, but perhaps WD should make a recall???? On 1/31/12, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

I have a 500 external WD thats making the usual "near failure noises" (occasional clunking heads). But its SMART data shows no sign of imminent failure. I don't think its WD alone tho. I've had 3 Desktop Seagates, 3 Laptop Seagates and 1 Maxtor quit on me prematurely. All this bad luck begs the question..... *Do we have any Useful Consumer Awareness Groups in Kenya?* _______________________________________________ *Without requirements or design, programming is the art of adding bugs to an empty text file.* _______________________________________________ * * 2012/1/31 Eva Kimathi <evakimathi@gmail.com>

I have experienced such failure from a 2TB External Network Drive and a 2TB Internal SATA drive both from Western Digital in under 6 months from purchase and installation, both genuine. KEBS sounds more and more like a stupid sleeping giant.. They dont even notice that Energizers manufactured right here in kenya last 86 days less than the ones made abroad.. How will they discern a good or bad hardisk - when their focus is like Kanjo -- efficient at collecting money, but not giving service !

Washington I have experienced the same problem with a couple of disks which I purchased late last year. What is even annoying on of my disk went away a very big chunck of my private data that I have kept for a long long period. And that is the advantage of taking Manufacturing to Asia !!!

Wash, Kindly advice on a good HDD external Network drive...since you have scared me on WD performance and also after having a nasty experience with a WD myself last week.... What other option do we have... rgds Chege On 2/21/12, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

The problem I've had was with those 2.5" internal disks. I should have been specific, because I still have a WD (1TB, powered) and WD 500GB USB external disks. I bought these from a very reliable vendor who I believe would never want to import any of those fake Chinese stuff.... Anyone here who has had it rough with Seagate? I mean disk failures (without subjecting them to an excessive G) On Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 15:09, Chege <compulinekenya@gmail.com> wrote:

I use Transcends - still quite reliable. There is this yellow and black one - that claims to be 'military tested' [?]

Whatever they mean by "military tested". Was it run over by one of those big tanks and it still continued to work?:-) On Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 23:59, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:
