Not sure if I should post this. I've been reading about this one, but one unique question came to mind. Most comments are about trying to sell kenya as a destination, Brand kenya, software outsourcing etc. What I've not see so far is inward destinations i.e do you know of a kenyan BPO company and what is does ( no google or cck website pls, just think of one offhead ). I understand BPO just well enough to know these guys need to borrow a leaf from tourism sector. As a technos, what does the BPO company render as services?
Is BPO an export model and its services not allowed inland? These guys are going to be overtaken by a concept called Virtual offices, Virtual Support, Virtual Fax and fixed line ( voip fixed number routing to your line ). my thots.
I work in a BPO company. Our services are used by both local, regional and international clients. As regards services offered; here's a list of some that can be offered: 1. Customer support e.g. Safcom can outsource their customer support to a BPO 2. Transcription especially for medical records 3. Chat i.e. Think online chat support, as is available on chekelea.com, this can also be outsourced esp if the traffic is very high 4. To accelerate the growth of BPO the government should outsource most of their administrative work. like in S.A But other issues such as information and data protection legislation should be put in place first. The wholesale approach of the Communication Act ...cannot adequately address these issues...maybe separate legislation. Alot of people have been discussing that with the arrival of fibre ...BPO OPPORTUNITIES will flourish...maybe or maybe not...if we don't address the issues of legislation then fibre will make it easy for local companies,multinationals in kenya to outsource basic work to India OR other established BPO havens.Remember fibre is a pipe so traffic can flow both ways........
