This is good. More ppl use public transport = less traffic. Wish a fee would be added for any car to enter town like some recent experiments/ ongoing projects in other city centres: http://www.google.com/search?q=city+car+fee+experiments Not needing a car is one of the few advantages of living in a city. Higher living costs but lower transportation costs :) It is hard taking someone who complains about traffic seriously if the person is alone in their car to and from work. Ripple effect will be less collections by city council anyway because everyone is constructing away from the CBD and putting private parking spaces. Me thinks its fundraising for elections. those other cities have very good, clean and efficient railway, trams and bus transport that are affordable and reliable come rain, snow, summer etc...
what do we have here, chaotic matatus that from january when they are wiped out of CBD...anyone working in town will pay double fares by the remaining big matatus allowed into the CBD...
in short, working in CBD will be two jobs....transport and the actual work...

Not needing a car is one of the few advantages of living in a city. Higher living costs but lower transportation costs :)
It is hard taking someone who complains about traffic seriously if the person is alone in their car to and from work.

Most times when been carried in a matatu, your knees will either lack enough legroom, you will have to fight for pace with the spare tyre and excess passengers and Worse of all, some of this guys will drive like they are participating in some reality show. If you are a passenger in a matatu that suddenly changes lanes at top speeds just undercutting some truck on mombasa road, then changes back to the spot it was for no reason, you cannot wait to buy your own car before you end up as a statistic. At some point, you get afraid of sitting at the front or just behind the front (I mean, the engine has to move after an impact. Then you look at the amount of metal that goes into making matatus , metal seats, metal decorations and add the unsecured spare tyre at the back. At this point, you begin praying for a safe journey. Safety regulations and physics are things people do not understand.

LOLEST @ Sidney. That one just made my day

Lets wait to see the guy in Jail before we celebrate. Have you ever heard a Kenyan public servant jailed for corruption? The state has perfected the PR around arresting, charging and throwing the case out on a technicality. I can almost bet my money, but deep inside(as every other kenyan) im hoping that this one will be different and we are ushered into a new dispensation for sure. Matatu fare is also likely to go up since they are also affected. Matatus are now paying 4,000 from 2,200 and buses 8,000 from 4,000

Matatu fare will go app primarily because of simple supply and demand, people with more money (they had 140+roughly 200 bob for transport daily, modest estimates), have been pushed into the now limited matatu's... by the way check out this arithmetic. A standard car is about ten foot by four foot wide, thats fourty square foot. that car paying Ksh 400 a day for thirty days (yeah, i know thats a bit of a stretch) will pay a cool Ksh 12,000 a month for an area that is 40Sq foot. this computes to about Ksh 300 per square foot. with this kind of rate, and with the likes of Lonrho charging close to 65 per sqare foot...... why not just convert the whole of town into parking spaces? :-) my2cnts On Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 10:21 PM, Edward Obiko <edobie@gmail.com> wrote:

Skunks, The seasonal tickets are supposed to go up from 2k to 3k for private cars. Thats 50% the cumulative daily costs. There more people will opt to go the seasonal way. By so doing Kanju will have slashed the work those yellow kabuti staff do. My question, is this a way devised to reduce their head count while at the same time ensure that the collections actually reach the council books? I guess the general idea here is not to de-congest the town. The spaces remain the same and more and more kenyans are buying cars. I still think parking is still very cheap in Nairobi. If I were to get my way, I would fix parking at an hourly rate, say 100bob an hour, and then no one will go to town and simply park their cars there, and then the Kenyans who have stuff to do at the CBD will come and get parking - then, I would improve transportation within the CBD at nearly zero bob, so you won't have a reason to take your car to the CBD if you work there, but thats just in my head, again!!! ./Ok3ch On Thu, Oct 28, 2010 at 10:39 AM, joe mwirigi <joemwirigi@gmail.com> wrote:

Ok3ch, You mean like they do in London, for instance, where it is very expensive to park a personal car within the CBD. However, as Eric Mugo has said, in London you have an almost very efficient transport system in the form of Taxi, Metro Buses and the Tube system. It's almost impossible to arrive late for anything even if you did not use a personal car! Compare that to Nairobi and you see we're looking at things in a very skewed manner. What Mr. Kisia is saying is not that they want to de-ongest the CBD. Noooooo!! I don't know why anyone in this forum is trying to put these words into Kisia's (or NCC's) mouth!! What they have said very clearly is that they want to generate more revenue for NCC to meet their budgets. It's nothing to do with improving anything for the Nairobi residents. The de-congestion of the CBD was a project of the Metropolitan Ministry, which seem to have become dormant, or only knows a thing or two about installing street lights. And BTW, suppose we elected Michael Joseph to run the City for us, or better still, become the Governor of Nairobi County... wouldn't me make big leaps???? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

During a bar talk last night on the same, someone made me think about Nairobi in the days when Kenys Bus was working perfectly and transport within the city was somewhat efficient. Maybe the population had not exploded, but something that simple can be used and not necessarily have metro trams & trains. An effective governor will certainly help Nairobi - not the Majiwa & Kisia type of rulers, who have no idea that they are running the city on behalf of Kenyans. ./Ok3ch On Fri, Oct 29, 2010 at 9:30 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

IF the Nissan Matatus will be banned January 2011 I give you this business idea under a Creative Commons license (attribution required :) The market will be flooded with cheap Nissan Matatus in various conditions so prices for the old Matatus will be very low. Set up a garage specialised in turning old Matatus into: - One Bedroom Safari Vehicles - Spacious four seaters - Fundi vehicle - Regular family cars with great storage ... the opportunities are endless with the expected price drop

@ Lawrence.. One taxes go up,, they never go back !!! (Read Kiyosaki, he says not in context : the government is a huge greedy machine, it spends without a plan, and once it tastes money, it does not know how to do with less)

"The 14 seaters will still operate but only long distance" "I think the old matatus will be sold taken upcountry for use until they are completely unroadworthy" I think that even if half of the Matatus will be switching to other routes there will be plenty left at throw away prices. It's not like there all of a sudden will be a huge demand for long distance transport. "This is not the first tym the govt has issued such ideas, there was a similar order for nissans in 2007 with a deadline for march 2008 but we all know what happened" "IF the Nissan Matatus will be banned January 2011" ... I'm with you there Gacheru, relocating businesses out of CBD would be best way of decongesting the city. -- Ngũgĩ Kĩmani | Fundi wa Mitambo | 0772 576846 | http://www.mafundi.co.ke/home On 27 October 2010 08:57, Tony Gacheru <tonygacheru@gmail.com> wrote:

those other cities have very good, clean and efficient railway, trams and bus transport that are affordable and reliable come rain, snow, summer etc...
what do we have here, chaotic matatus that from january when they are wiped out of CBD...anyone working in town will pay double fares by the remaining big matatus allowed into the CBD...
in short, working in CBD will be two jobs....transport and the actual work...

This is good. More ppl use public transport = less traffic. Wish a fee would be added for any car to enter town like some recent experiments/ ongoing projects in other city centres:

Not needing a car is one of the few advantages of living in a city. Higher living costs but lower transportation costs :)
It is hard taking someone who complains about traffic seriously if the person is alone in their car to and from work.

People use own cars for comfort,, compare travelling on rainy days to e.g church -- not fun ! I have always been an advocate of moving things away from CBD,, it started with Westlands,, but since 2008, the hussle and bustle has also caught up with Westlands. I remember in 2003-2005 when we used to walk to westy from campo for lack of mats in the inside routes. There were very few private vehicles on the road siku hizo...
