Hi, Supposing I wanted a network link to connect two premises 500 metres apart; Between copper and fibre optic what would be the Skunkworks choice? Thanks, David

i would love this answer too, especially factoring in costs, practicality and termination. Forget throughput... :-) On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 1:12 AM, David Njuguna <dnjuguna@gmail.com> wrote:

depends on your budget and the available networking equipment, I think. of course you know which is faster and has a larger capacity. I think you also need to give details of traffic been carried

If there is already existing infrastructure from a provider within that location, fiber is a good option. For you setting up the link yourself, copper is the way to go. On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 1:17 AM, [ Brainiac ] <arebacollins@gmail.com> wrote:

@David I think Gregory has a good point. It is cost effective to use copper if u are to do it on your own, especially if it is within the same compound. However, your challenge is the 500m distance. This may not be covered using copper and thus the best option is to obtain a fiber link through a provider. This way, you don't have to cater for civil works, trenching license, terminal equipment e.t.c On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 7:58 AM, Gregory Okoth <gregory.okoth@gmail.com>wrote:

Hi David, Depending on the capacity and latency requirements, you can also consider outdoor Wi-Fi (not recommended for voice traffic). On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 8:58 AM, techi <myskunkworks@gmail.com> wrote:

David, Looks like there is no infrastructure of sorts in that area. Whether copper or fiber, you will "have to cater for civil works, trenching license, terminal equipment e.t.c" just as 'techi' put it. However, without much rhetoric, just look for quotes from different contractors! Its not a definite price value for such a project. And on another note..is this distance within a private property or through other private/public properties. In case of the property being exclusive, you can just consider trenchworks, then use repeaters/switches for a standard CAT5 ethernet cables in 100meter intervals!! (I don't know even if that works, but if done well, it can give you 100Mbps = LAN speeds!) Otherwise, just request for quotes for the works from contractors and do price comparisons!! here is another one, can ethernet over power lines go past my electric meter to my neighbours then down the street? or will a transformer mess things up as there is no direct connection (primary and secondary windings kind of stuff) additionally, what throughputs would one expect with such a venture? 10? 100? 1000Mbps? maybe that might work for you @david. just hook up at your place and then hook up at your neighbours and youre good to go. :-) On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 10:37 AM, Gregory Okoth <gregory.okoth@gmail.com>wrote:

I think Gregory has a good point. It is cost effective to use copper
if
u are to do it on your own, especially if it is within the same compound. However, your challenge is the 500m distance. This may not be covered using copper and thus the best option is to obtain a fiber link through a provider. This way, you don't have to cater for civil works, trenching license, terminal equipment e.t.c

Considering you can't do copper ethernet comfortably over 100 meters, then your copper options will be limited to non Ethernet ones. You can go with a 4 wire copper trunk and have an E1 (2mb) between the 2 points but you need dte's to connect to your ethernet switch. On the other hand fiber will easily go 500m and you can get entry level fiber switches below 20k on both sides. You will need to splice it initially but that's a one time cost. I would settle for wireless even b4 copper, too much headache for to little capacity. But fiber is best. Regards Ken On 9 September 2010 12:45, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

hi, @kenneth, what kind of range does fiber have before you need a repeater? On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 1:21 PM, Kenneth Ndirangu <kendirangu@gmail.com>wrote:

I think the lowest is 550 for multimode and 2km for single mode. and you don't need repeaters what you change is the transciever (some small connector you plug into the switch) I think quite a number of structured cabling companies can do this for you quite cheaply plus everything is locally available. Go fiber its cheap .. why trench its Private land anyway you could put it on poles ... fiber products are cheap these days .. splicing is just 2 - 3 K per splice there are many guys doing it in Nai now ... you will have high speeds .. Most SFPs S1.1 will shoot 5KM so you need no repeaters ... ;-) On 9 September 2010 18:32, Kenneth Ndirangu <kendirangu@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi David, A dark fiber is a fiber between two points. And that's it. (Stand alone) If you do CAT 6 it means you need a repeater every 85/100M.= $$$$ Listen to Mr Watson Kambo he is a wise Sage :-) On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 11:49 PM, Watson Kambo <wkwats@gmail.com> wrote:

at a distance of 500m I doubt any splicing will be required. Fiber is the better opton for you. On 9/10/2010 12:49 AM, Watson Kambo wrote:

On the other hand fiber will easily go 500m and you can get entry level fiber switches below 20k on both sides. You will need to splice it initially but that's a one time cost.
I would settle for wireless even b4 copper, too much headache for to little capacity. But fiber is best.

Supposing I wanted a network link to connect two premises 500 metres apart; Between copper and fibre optic what would be the Skunkworks choice?
Maybe you want to look at this and similar products, and go fiber. http://www.rad-direct.com/Product-hcon-fiber-converter.htm BR S -- This message represents the official view of the voices in my head.

Hi David, When you say fiber or copper, which technology do you intend to use between the two? DSL? Ethernet? Ethernet over SDH? I am asking because this will determne the cost to a large extent. Find someone in KDN or Jamii telkom to talk to. I believe they can give you a good quote for a dark fiber between the two. Copper I have no idea. @John Doe, By copper I was thinking something in the lines of CAT 6. What is dark fibre? am wondering; is it invisible light as the carrier signal? Thanks On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 4:23 PM, John Doe <fivepings@gmail.com> wrote:
